Thanks to Safeway employee

| September 28, 2006 12:00 AM

Editor,

I was recently shopping at the Polson Safeway grocery store. When I got to the checkout stand, I realized I did not have my wallet. At the time, I assumed that I had forgotten it at home. When I returned home later and found no wallet, I became very concerned.

In these days of identity theft and worse, losing one's wallet can be much more than the hassle of canceling credit cards and checks plus the loss of any cash. I was relieved, yet cautious, when I had a telephone message that the manager at Safeway was holding my wallet.

I called the store and an assistant manager was kind enough to go through my wallet so I could determine if anything was missing. My ID, credit cards, and checks were all present. To my utter amazement, all the cash was also intact.

I realized how fortunate I had been, and wanted to thank the person who had turned in my wallet. The Safeway manager said an employee had turned in my wallet and that this happens fairly often. It is the company policy not to allow financial rewards for such good behavior. At first I felt frustrated that I could not give a reward to this person, then I realized that it is not necessary to reward an honest person for being honest.

In these days of crime, corporate malfeasance, and violence, it is a bright reminder that there are more good people out there than bad. To the honest Safeway employee, you have my heartfelt and public gratitude.
