Lily Bielby

| April 13, 2007 12:00 AM

POLSON — Lily Bielby, 93, died of natural causes at Ronan St. Luke Extended Care on Friday April 6, 2007.

She was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Bowbells, N.D. to Niels “Pete” and Christine Andersen, the youngest of five children. Her siblings were Myrtle (Rungborg), Harvey, Clifford, and Andrew. In 1916, the family moved to Dagmar. Lily graduated from the 8th grade at Hawthorne School where she attended all eight grades.

In her late teens, she went to Chicago and worked for a private family, and later, she moved to New Orleans and worked as a cook’s helper on a plantation. Lily moved to California in 1936 where she met Henry “Brownie” Brown, a truck driver, and married him a few years later. They lived in Oakland for a time and then moved to Orland, Calif., in the spring of 1943. In 1944, they moved to Grenora, N.D., and Henry went into a partnership with Lily’s brother, Harvey, and they ran an International Harvester implement agency there, and also were partners in a farm.

In the late ‘40s they moved to Polson and bought a house on the East Shore of Flathead Lake and Lily became a member of the Mystic Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, and made many new friends. She and Henry spent several winters in Mesa, Ariz., but moved to an apartment in Polson when his health deteriorated.

After Henry died on April 1, 1967, Lily remained single for many years and then married Rusty Bielby on Jan. 25, 1977. They enjoyed a wonderful life together until he died in September 1996. Neither Lily nor Rusty had children, but they enriched the lives of so many people who loved them. They both received the Jefferson Awards from Governor Ted Schwinden because of their kind and compassionate acts. They met trains and planes, shopped and brought food for ill friends and neighbors, chauffeured people to their doctor appointments and cooked dinners for those who were alone on the holidays. They did countless other “Good Samaritan” deeds.

Lily loved trying new recipes and was a wonderful cook. She loved music, dancing and always had a good time. She was dearly loved by all her nieces and nephews and by two little neighbor girls, D.J. and Alex, who she adored.
