RONAN — About 720 pounds of Alaskan crab went through the boiler at the Ronan City Park last Friday evening and people lined up to fill their plates — and their stomachs — for a good cause.
"The Chamber of Commerce paid for the crab, and with ticket sales the chamber will be reimbursed. The remaining money will be split between the Ronan Fire Department and the park," said Carlene Bockman, executive secretary for the chamber. "This is a fund raiser that we do every couple of years."
Retired fireman Jack Fay volunteered to cook the crab in a 200-gallon boiler that was set up in the park. Once the crab was cooked, he gathered it up with a net and added it to the "all you can eat" buffet that also included a few side dishes.
"It's a lot of fun to do this," Fay said. "And it's for a good cause."
Many other firemen volunteered to pass out melted butter and keep the buffet line moving until the last crab leg was gone.
