It was a record-breaking week for two Charlo ladies.

Two-time state champion Amanda Murphy set a new Charlo discus record with a toss of 124 feet and 3 1/2 inches at the Florence Invitational, breaking her previous record of 120 feet and one inch. Teammate Adri Hammond also set a school record in the pole vault with a 10 foot one inch mark at the Lake County meet in Polson on Tuesday.

Both girls also placed at the Top Ten meet last Tuesday, with Murphy taking second place in the discus (116’ 03”) and Hammond getting fourth place in the pole vault (9’6”).

After breaking the school discus record, Murphy proceeded to win the Florence Invitational shot put (37’ 4 1/2”) and watched as Hammond promptly handled the pole vault (9’6”).

“That was a great deal for her,” said Charlo head coach Bret Thompson of Murphy. “She was a little disappointed with herself in the shot put, but she hit her high for the discus at the next meet.”

“That was a season high for Adri,” Thompson added, reacting to Hammond’s mark at the Top Ten tournament.

The Charlo girls team took fourth place overall at the Florence Invitational on Friday, scoring 50 1/2 team points.

Ability in the shot put apparently runs in the family, as Amanda Murphy’s little sister Stephanie Murphy scored a fourth place finish in the shot put (32’5”) behind her sister. The younger Murphy also took sixth in the triple jump (30’ 9”).

Hayley Carr got sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.76), Megan Harriman joined Murphy in the discus, taking fifth (105’ 3”) and Rochelle Toussaint grabbed fifth in the high jump (4’ 6”).

“We do a small rewards thing for the kid’s best times and marks,” said Thompson. “And this week I am giving out a lot, so I would say things are going pretty well.”

T.J. Kerr was the only athlete from the boys team to place, as he took sixth place in the shot put (42’ 3”).

“We have some kids who are sore and a little banged up,” continued Thompson. “But were getting right down to it, we start districts pretty quick.”

Charlo was in action at the Lake County meet at Polson as the Leader went to press. They begin the district tournament on Wednesday, May 9, at Polson high school.
