H. Everett Smith

POLSON — H. Everett Smith, 101, of Polson, died on May 5, 2007, at Evergreen Health & Rehab Center.

Everett was born on July 7, 1905, in Fredericksburg, Iowa, to the Rev. C.E. Smith and Clara (Somers) Smith. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Montana Wesleyan College in Helena. He taught high school chemistry and was a restaurant owner and chef in Polson for 35 years. Everett married Luella Herreid in June 24, 1935, in Polson.

Everett was a city councilman for six years, a member of IOOF Lodge where he served as Noble Grand of the local chapter and Grand master of the State Chapter. He was also elected representative to the Sovereign Grand lodge meetings in New York City, Cleveland, Vancouver, BC and Cincinnati. He was also a Lions Club member for 25 years and headed up the local Salvation Army Chapter for 20 years.

He was a member of the Lake County Council on Aging, American Red Cross, Lake County Tax Appeals Board and was a past Polson Senior Citizens president.

He is survived by his daughter, Marjorie Reid and her husband Jerry of Redding, Calif., three grandchildren, Deborah White, Brian Reid and Theron Reid and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. in the Polson Community Church with the Rev. Richard Widerholdt officiating.

Cremation and arrangements are by Grogan Funeral Home & Crematory, Polson.

‘Jim’ Kimball

ST. GEORGE, Utah — James W. “Jim” Kimball, 71, died April 27, 2007, in St. George.

He was born Dec. 4, l935, in Portland, Ore., to Vida and Oliver Kimball. He married Barbara Ellen Carlson on Dec. 30, 1957, in Idaho.

Jim spent his childhood and early adult life in Montana. He was a graduate of Polson High School. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation from high school. He spent two years in the military. Jim worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 25 years. Upon retiring, he built and ran a motel and restaurant with his wife, Barbara.

He is survived by his children, Kim (Jeff) of Carson City, Nevada; Mark (Mary) of Phoenix; David (Sonya) of Fredonia, Ariz., Kathi (Ray of St. George; and Shawn (Patti) of Tooele, Utah; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Vida of Polson; brother Ted of Spokane, and sister Gayle of Polson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara.

Funeral services were held May 1 in the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel in St. George. Interment was in the Tonaquint Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.metcalfmortuary.com

Linda Marie Campbell

POLSON — Linda Marie Campbell, 63, of Polson went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2007.

Linda was born to Calvin and Elsie Ike on May 26, 1943, in Williston, N.D. She grew up and graduated from high school in Williston, where she met her future husband, Bruce.

She married Bruce Campbell in Williston on Nov. 11, 1960. They moved to Polson in 1966. Linda always was helpful in the family businesses. She was an active and faithful member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Polson.

Linda’s greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. She always enjoyed hobbies and crafts, reading and playing cards with her husband and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband Bruce of Polson; her children Laura and Jim Burrowes of Polson; John and Cheri Campbell of Olympia, Wash.; Jennifer and Charles Salois of Helena.; and seven grandchildren, Brianne, Mara and Kaitlyn Burrowes, Michael and Amanda Campbell, and Alexander and Josie Salois; her brother and sisters, Lauren and Helen Ike of Condon, Richard and Kate Ike of Polson, Steven and Frieda Ike of Williston, and Sara Ike of Williston; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 8, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. D. Jacobson officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in the name of Linda M. Campbell to the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc.

Arrangements were by Grogan Funeral Home of Polson.

Steven Walchuk

RONAN — Thomas Steven Walchuk, 81, passed away to be with the Lord on April 30, 2007.

He was born in a sod house to Peter and Pearl Walchuk on Jan. 31, 1926, in Whitewater. During his childhood, Tommy’s family left the prairie and relocated to a farm west of Ronan in 1936.

In 1948, Tommy married Evadene Marie Bilile. They raised their family in Round Butte, where he enjoyed raising horses and Hereford cattle. He was a retired farmer/rancher, businessman, drove the Senior Citizen bus, and welcomed many from around the world to the RV Park. He enjoyed playing music at dances and extended care facilities and water dowsing.

He enjoyed meeting and visiting people. He kept in close touch with families throughout the U.S. and Canada.

His wife, infant daughter Mary, a brother and his parents preceded him in death.

Surviving are his sister Lillian Pablo; brothers Leo, Joe and Jim Walchuk; daughters Diane and Theresa; sons Laurence, Marvin and Stan; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was held May 4 at Sacred Heart Parish in Ronan with Father Jim Connor officiating. Interment followed the services at the Ronan Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Peter and Pearl Walchuk Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at Carroll College, Helena.

Ruby June Dalke

ST. IGNATIUS — Ruby June Dalke, 77, died at her home Monday, May 7, 2007.

Ruby was born in Melvern, Kansas on June 21, 1929, to Elza and Golda Rider. The family moved to Chinook, where Ruby met Raymond Dalke. They were later wed in Polson on Sept. 3, 1946. Ruby and Ray bought their farm in St. Ignatius in 1951.

Ruby was an avid reader and according to her children could cook with “the best of them.” Even in her later years her cane and willow switches were a sharp reminder of one’s manners in Ruby’s presence. Ruby was loved and respected by all who knew her.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Maria Benfit, and her parents.

Ruby is survived by her children Judy (Britt) Salois of Pablo, Tom (Kay) Dalke of Seeley Lake, John (Lorie) Dalke of Thompson Falls, Ted (Karen) Dalke of Wilburn, Okla., Ed (Bev) Dalke of Pablo, Lena Dalke of St. Ignatius and Fred (Tracey) of Ronan; three sisters, Ruth (Louie) Parish, Jean (Ralph) Turner, and Marge (Bill) Tiegan; brother Bob (Nancy) Rider; numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews and several relatives and friends in the Chinook and Havre areas.

Cremation has taken place under the care of Foster & Durgeloh Funeral Home in St. Ignatius with graveside memorial services planned at the St. Ignatius Cemetery on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m.

LaVerne Allen Taylor

DIXON — LaVerne Allen Taylor went to be with the Lord of May 3, 2007. He died at the Veterans VA Rest Home in Columbia Falls.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1931, at Miller, S.D., to Earl and Fern Taylor. He grew up in Miller and attended school here. He joined the National Guard d was stationed in Alaska. He was heavy equipment operator.

LaVerne married Hope Frost Grider in 1958, and they lived at Napa, Calif., until they divorced. He married Helen Dullente Hanson in 1964. They lived in Auburn, Wash., and Quincy, Wash. He had six step-children. He livd in Dixon for many years.

LaVerne had a passion for working on cars, tractors and other machinery. He had an antique “Gibson” tractor and spent a lot of time plowing out people during the winter at Dixon. He loved to play cards. He was always there to help others with their problems and had many friends and always had a happy smile and a great personality.

He was a member of the Dixon Senior Center and attended the Baptist church in Dixon.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Earl and Fern Taylor.

He is survived by his brother, Daryl Gene and wife Neva of Gwen Valley, Ariz.; his nephew, Perry Lynn Taylor and his wife Elaine and their sons Daryl Wayne and Kenneth Earl of Oak Harbor, Wash., and his aunt, Miriam Taylor of Seattle, and many cousins.

At his request there will be no funeral services. Memorial donations may be sent to the Dixon Senior Center, Box 85, Dixon, MT 59831 or to the VA Rest Home at 400 Veterans Drive, Box 250, Columbia Falls, MT 59912.

Juanita Potter

POLSON — Juanita Potter, 76, of Polson died of natural causes on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Juanita was born May 27, 1930, in Kalispell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Potter, son Micheal Potter and daughter, Melody Potter; her parents, Robert and Luzzell Hill; brothers, Leroy Gene Hill, Clifford Hill, Harry Hill, Bob Hill, Ralph Hill and Melvin Hill; and a sister, Darlene Thorsrud.

Surviving are daughter, Judy Gregg; sons, Roger and Kelly Potter; six grandkids, and seven great-grandkids; brothers Raymond Hill, Leonard Hill and John Hill; and three sisters, Nola Bradbury, Vivian Shaw and Jeani Linn.

Cremation has taken place. No funeral service is planned. Grogan Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family.
