Lorin Martin Jacobson

| April 3, 2008 12:00 AM

POLSON Lorin Martin Jacobson, 82, of Polson, died at his home on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

Lorin, son of Martin and Gracie Jacobson, was born in Wadena, Minn., on May 3, 1925. He spent his childhood there until the family moved to Whitewood, S.D. Lorin served in the military during World War II and was stationed in Japan and the Philippines. Upon his return, he attended Black Hills State College where he met and married Shirley Brigham. They were fortunate to spend 60 wonderful years together.

Lorin and Shirley moved to Polson in 1960. Lorin and long time business partner Paul Fugleberg purchased Treasure State Publishing (Flathead Courier and Ronan Pioneer) where he worked for 15 years. Lorin sold his interest to Paul, and then he and Shirley purchased the A & W Restaurant. In 1982, they sold the A & W and Lorin became the Clerk and Recorder for Lake County until his retirement in 1990.

Lorin was active in many community organizations. Over the years, he was an active member of the VFW, American Legion, Rotary, Sons of Norway, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors for the Flathead Historical Museum, and a council member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

When his four sons were young, Lorin spent many hours coaching Little League and following their many school activities. He received honors from the American Legion and VFW and represented the chapter in Washington D.C. at the WW II Veterans Memorial. Many hours were enjoyed taking care of his sheep, tending fruit trees and working in his garden.

Although Lorin was very active, his first priority was always his family. He enjoyed nothing better than having his four sons and their families home to visit. Throughout his life, Lorin always demonstrated his integrity, honesty and dignity.

Thank you Dad for always supporting us. The commitment you had for your marriage and family is something we will always try to live up to. Thank you for owning the local drive-in while we were in high school. Thanks for helping put all four of us through college. Thank you for helping us fix our cars without boring us with the mechanical stuff. Thanks for the acreage on South Shore. Thanks for being the best dad a son could hope for.

Lorin is survived by his wife Shirley; his four sons, Rod (Karen) of Calgary, Alberta, Jim (Margo) of Missoula, Brad (Megan) of Yakima, Wash., and Jeff of Helena; sisters, Eunice Anderson, Genevieve Nickerson, Janet Mason and Arlene Gustafson. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Joel, Jenna, Logan, Kelsey, Nick, John and Maria.

Services were held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Saturday, March 29, with the Rev. Paul Rowold officiating. Military honors followed services at the church. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Grogan Funeral Home and Crematory.

Memorials on Lorins behalf can be made to the Flathead Historical Museum or Good Shepherd Lutheran Christmas Fund. Condolences to the family at www.groganfuneralhome.com

Alice Elizabeth Roberts

POLSON Alice Elizabeth Roberts was born in Polson on Dec. 4, 1970. The good Lord took her on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008. While she was on this earth she touched the lives of everyone with whom she came in contact. Alice loved life and lived it to the fullest. There was nothing ordinary about her. She was an inspiration to all who met her. Born with a congenital heart defect, she never complained about her situation. Instead, she helped, comforted, and worried about others.

Alice leaves behind many loved family members and dear friends. Among family she leaves behind are her beloved husband and best friend, Jon Roberts; their two sons, Jay and Bryce; her parents, Karl and Ellen Kaphammer; sister Liz Courville; brothers Kip and Cal Courville; grandmother Alice Ogden and grandparents Bob and Leoba Engles as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and many wonderful friends. Alice had a very special place in her heart for her grandfather Dick Ogden and grandmother Alice Ogden.

Alices love for her family and close friends was unwavering and unconditional. She truly was a beautiful young woman.

Alice grew up and graduated in Ronan. She moved to Post Falls, Idaho, when she met the love of her life and her soul mate, Jon Roberts. She helped raise his children like they were her own. She loved the great outdoors, and loved being with friends and family.

Alices big heart was failing her and it was time for a new one. She faced this with courage and excitement. With Jon at her side they made their plans for the future. She moved to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in October of 2007 to begin the wait for her new heart. While there she lived at the Gift of Life Transplant House, where she met many new friends who became like a second family to her.

We will miss her deeply. There will be an emptiness without her presence but a fullness with her spirit in our hearts felt by all. A memorial service to celebrate Alices life was held on March 29 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ronan.
