Both of the Charlo track teams took home some impressive hardware from the Drummond/Alberton Invitational Meet at Dornblaser Field in Missoula last Thursday.

The Lady Vikings grabbed third place among the meet's 17 teams with 38 points, thanks primarily to three title-winners.

Sophomore Stephanie Murphy won the day's shot put event with a distance of 34 feet, 9 inches. Kate Couburn followed by winning the discus with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches. Stephanie Maughan rounded out the day's champions by clearing 7 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault.

"I always expect my athletes to place," head coach Bret Thompson said. "I thought things went really well for us. We had a great day for track, especially for our first meet of the year."

The boys' team was led by the meet's top 1,600-meter relay team, consisting of Jeff Bucholz, Bauth Doherty, Champ Firestone and J.P. Toussaint.

"I was a little surprised by their time. They were the ones talking about how they were all going to run :55 splits," Thompson sad. "I guess they knew a little more than their coach did at the time."

Bucholz rounded out a solid performance with a second-place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:08:82.

"We're hoping to get these kinds of results and points out of [Bucholz] in both distance races," Thompson said. "He posted a great time and I know he's hoping to build on it."

The Vikings will return to their schedule this week at Bigfork on Thursday, before hosting their own meet next Tuesday.

"The idea going into every meet is trying to improve on our last meet. That's what we'll be looking to do," Thompson said.
