Flathead Lake 3 on 3 is slamtastic

Around 280 teams fifth grade and up hit the courts on Main Street for the 16th Annual Flathead Lake three-on-three tournament Saturday and Sunday in Polson. Ballers traveled from as far as Seattle and Canada to take part in the hoopfest which, according to tournament director Rich Forbis, has earned a reputation as not only one of the most scenic tournaments, but also one of the most competitive.

"A lot of the players say they come for the competition," he said. "Some of them know people who live on the lake and they make a vacation out of it."

The two-day event featured intense match-ups in bracket play as well as a three-point shooting competition and a slam dunk contest with two categories, six-feet-one-and-under and six-feet-one-and-over. Twenty-four half-courts were set up along Main Street and Third Avenue. Each game went to 20 minutes or the first team to 20 points.

"We thought it was very successful," Forbis said. "It's always great to see how people come together to support this and how the merchants allow us to shut down the street and disrupt their weekend … All the volunteer help — that's the highlight to me."
