Charlo sails through districts; boys, girls nab titles
By Trent Makela / Leader Staff
Both of the Charlo High School track and field teams grabbed titles at the District 14-C meet in Polson last Thursday.
The boys' squad pulled away from the other five schools at the meet with 244 team points - 55 more than second-place Superior.
The race for the girls' title was much closer throughout the day, but the Lady Vikings were able to score 182 total points to best second-place Hot Springs by 26.
"I think we had a few surprises and that's what you need when you get into team scoring," Charlo coach Bret Thompson said. "I believe we're taking 30 kids to divisionals next week and many of them are in position to place there and get to state. That's what we were looking for."
Competitors needed to finish in the top six at the district meet to qualify for the Western C divisional at Dornblaser Stadium in Missoula next Friday and Saturday.
Freshman Chance Rosenbaum led the way for the Vikings, picking up individual titles in both the 1600 and 3,200-meter races. Teammate Jeff Bucholz finished less than two seconds behind Rosenbaum for second place in the 1600, and the two runners have traded best times all year.
"I'm sure there's a little of [a rivalry] in there. Hopefully that's what will motivate them both to do their best," Thompson said. "Chance had a great meet and having two great runners is a good thing for us. It's just not a good thing for those people competing against us."
Bucholz won an earlier title of his own in the 800-meters.
The Vikings picked up additional wins from Cody Nitschke in both hurdle events, J.P. Toussaint in the pole vault, Brandon Pope in the high jump and both of their relay teams.
Sophomore Stephanie Murphy led the Lady Vikings with her own pair of individual titles. Personal bests in both the shot put and discus helped Murphy to easily pull away from the field. She appears ready to challenge for both titles again next weekend.
Freshman Brittany Shaver also picked up two convincing first-place finishes in the 800 and 1600-meters.
"As far as comparing our district to other districts, Brittany will need to cut some time to get to state," Thompson said. "It's always good to have a freshman winning events and coming back to compete for a few more years."
The Lady Vikings received additional titles from Rochelle Toussaint in the high jump, Jaris Kelley in the pole vault and their 1,600-meter relay team.
"We've had pretty good depth all year. If we can stay healthy and a few things roll our way, both teams have chances to get some more hardware at the end of next weekend," Thompson said. "There are a few other teams in the same boat, but if we take care of our end - I think we can end up in the top three."
