Chiefs show promise in scrimmage

The Chiefs put on a show at this week's scrimmage in Ronan. As new coach Jim Benn watched on from behind the line Friday, senior quarterback Mike Fisher captained an energetic and versatile young offense which didin't often disappoint. Fisher was able to hand the ball off to junior Cory Hardy or senior Tyson Noyes, senior in the back field for large gains, or scramble and hit his receivers on the run.
Perhaps what most kept the many fans cheering and the Chief's second string defense on their toes was when Fisher carried the ball himself. Turning on the jets, Fisher zigged and zagged for field-length breakaways more than once. It certainly didn't hurt to have big back Tyson Noyes leading the way, a player being referred to as "a blocking machine" amongst coaches standing in the the backfield.
When it came time to switch over to defense, that's all there was. With Fisher playing outside linebacker and Noyes at cornerback, the Chief's speedy second string was overpowered, barely gaining a yard. According to veteran defensive back coach Dusty Smith, the team looks much better this year. "I mean," he said, "you can see how explosive our offense is."
After a dismal season the year before the Chiefs will have their hands full when practice ends and the real games begin, starting with Corvallis at home this Thursday at 7 p.m.
