Multitasking woes
I have trouble with multitasking. Researching for what I hope will become a book is an exercise in multi-tasking. I’m delving into so many things I’ve written over the past 56 years, it’s easy to get sidetracked.
The best part of research reveals joy at the accomplishments of people I’ve written about and of the pleasures of writing about and photographing interesting places that I visited.
Occasional coffee klatsch comments can trigger nonsensical, goofy, off-the wall pieces. That happened following a coffee break discussion of the successful cloning of sheep and cattle. Some scientists began talking about the possibility of cloning body parts.
I pondered the wisdom of the trend. F’rinstance, suppose there were a couple clever cloners called Clyde and Clutie. That could cause considerable consternation if they got goo-goo eyed over each other, married and created a clan of their clones.
Endowed with common characteristics, each would have the human traits of free will, the ability to choose right from wrong – and some would opt for wrong as they grew. It happens in the best of families even now, you know.
A couple cracked clones from Clyde and Clutie’s clan could cause chaotic confusion. Can you imagine the headlines following a crime spree?
Cracked clones cast into clink; cops claim cracked clone Clancy committed crimes. Or, cute Clutie’s careless clonette, Cathy, caught conducting con scam.
So the case goes to court. So far, so good? Not really. More headlines: Crafty counselor claims incorrect clone canned; Clumsy clone Clifford committed crime, not Clancy. Or, Cathy clonette cites coercion, cancels scam confession.
After reviewing the facts, the judge dismisses the case citing insufficient, inconclusive evidence; all characteristics are identical – fingerprints, DNA, eye and hair color, etc.
Enter the ACLU championing a new cause – cloned rights, and correctly so. More headlines: Advocates charge Clancy clone illegally cast into calaboose; classy Cassie, clone clan’s beauty queen, charged with con scam; cute Clutie clonette cleared.
Can’t be too cautious with cloning. It can create imperfect perfection.
The traditional way to create families is preferable. Besides, there’s a lot more joy in the old-fashioned way!
