Charlo takes seventh district
POLSON — Charlo swept the District 14-C track meet for the seventh year in a row.
On the boys end, Charlo started things with a sweep of the 100-meter-dash. Chico Stipe, Chance Firestone and Josh Lords placed first through third and Stipe also took gold in the 200.
Zach Daugherty captured gold in the 800 and Chance Rosenbaum took home a gold of his own in the 1,600.
Add one more gold from Michael Smith in the 3,200, and Charlo had a big day in the individual running events.
The Vikings also took both the 400 and 1,600-meter relays.
In the field events, Clay Hoyt was the star, taking first in the javelin throw and the high jump.
Many other Vikings placed in the meet and will be headed to divisionals this week.
For the girls, Brittany Shaver was the top runner. Shaver took gold in both the 800 and 1,600.
And she did it with a heavy wind in her face.
“That wind,” she commented. “I wouldn’t want to run it again,” she said after running the 1,600 in 6:04.65.
“That’s not bad with the wind,” she said.
Not bad at all, and neither was Charlo’s sweep of the relays.
Shaver also ran with her team in the gold-medal mile relay.
She hopes to place top five in divisionals and run the 1,600 at state this year.
Last year, she finished seventh, just out of contention.
“I’m a lot quicker this year, so hopefully I can do it,” Shaver said.
Schaelyn Fell, a member of the short relay team, also took home a gold in the 100 hurdles.
Jaris Kelley finished first in both the 300 hurdles and the pole vault, not one to restrict herself to just the track or field. She also ran in both relays.
The other individual first place finisher for the Lady Vikings was Rochelle Toussaint in the high jump.
Only a freshman, Deondra Brown had a strong showing going gold on both relays and placing second in both the 200 and 400, and third in the 100.
It’s safe to say she knows what to do when the track shoes are on - hit the ground running.
Kate Coburn placed in all three throwing events to add up some serious points for her team.
Charlo competes on Friday and Saturday at the Class C Divisional tournament at UM.
