Streetball Legends

 at SKC

On Thursday, Oct.15 the SKC Athletic program is sponsoring a game between Streetball Legends from around the country and SKC players and local legends. Most of these Streetball Legends have toured with the AND1 MixTape tour, which had shows on EPSN. Scheduled to appear are Hot Sauce, Spyda, Springs and Highrizer, just to name a few. The game begins at 7 p.m. with the doors opening around 6 p.m.

Kids health fair

Just Do It for Our Kids Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, in St. Ignatius Community Center  and Friday, Oct. 16, at Two  Eagle River  School, Pablo.  There will be lots of gifts, nutritional snacks and a car seat check, among other features.

Priscilla Club meeting

The Priscilla Study Club will meet at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the home of Millie Mielke. 

RHS tailgater

The Ronan Booster Club will be having a tailgater at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16 (depending on weather, if it’s below 45 degrees it will be cancelled) for the last home football game of the season. We will be serving chili dogs/boats a dessert and drinks for a small cost. If you purchase a membership that night get two meals free! We will also be selling our exclusive Flying “R” shirts along with discounted shirts from previous years. On loan again from Ronan Power Products is the lit, lifted, loud, T-shirt shooting Power Ranger. During half time we will be shooting out shirts, balls and who knows what so don’t miss it. VVWC benefit rummage sale

Valley View Women’s club will have their fund raising event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Valley View Clubhouse 40762 Valley View Road.  Luncheon and bake sale.  Proceeds benefit the upkeep of the clubhouse.  Raising funds now to paint the outside of the clubhouse.  To donate items call Kelly Bailey 883-2910.  We are a non-profit organization and cash donations are welcome. Live Locally 5k

The Third Annual “Live Locally” 5K Run/Walk will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, in honor of Lung Health Awareness and National Pasta Month. HealthCare Plus and Country Pasta have teamed up to provide a 5K Run/Walk. There will be educational resources in regards to Lung Health and an onsite respiratory therapist to answer questions. All participants will receive free pasta and there will be an open prize drawing for all racers. All proceeds will be donated to Mission Valley Aquatics where all ages can benefit in supporting Lung Health. Race begins at Main and 7th, $15 with t-shirt prior to Oct.14. Calling all artists

The Sandpiper Gallery’s fall theme show “Splashes of Color-Flashes of Fall” is open to all artists, whether members of the gallery or not. Simply bring up to three pieces of your art to the gallery, 306 Main St. Polson, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. The show runs from Oct 20- Nov. 21 and a reception for all the artists and the public will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct 23. Free rifle sight-in day

Polson Shooters Association members are inviting the sportsmen of Mission Valley to join them to sight in their rifles for hunting season. The club’s range, located west of Polson on the Kerr Dam road, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Sunday, Oct. 18

Nazarene 50th celebration

The Pablo Church of The Nazarene will be celebrating 50 years on its present location in Pablo.  The Celebration Worship Service will be at 11 am. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the church, located on Old Hwy.  93,  just south of Pablo.  The service will be followed by a potluck dinner at noon.In May of 1959, the congregation of the Pablo Church of the Nazarene purchased the 2 acres of land where the church is presently located. In September of the same year, the Reservoir Valley School House was purchased.   The school house was moved onto the two acres in December.  This became the church.  The parsonage and other additions were built during the following years.  The most recent addition being the present worship sanctuary, completed in 1986. The Pablo Congregation invites everyone to join them for this anniversary celebration service. Call 675-0081 for more information.

The film “Not Evil, Just Wrong,” is a feature-length documentary which takes on the conventional wisdom of global warming.

Farmer in concert

The People’s Center welcomes actor, singer Gary Farmer on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Two Eagle River School. Gary was the founder and publisher of Aboriginal Voices Magazine, a magazine which was devoted to Native Canadian issues. He is well known for his roles in “Pow-wow  Highway,” “Skins” and “Smoke Signals.”

Dry meat social

The People’s Center will be hosting its annual Dry Meat Social on Monday, Oct. 19, in Pablo at the center. This is a time for people to bring in their game and learn how to slice and dry the meat. GED Prep Class

Offered

 The Adult Education program of the Polson School District is offering a Free GED Prep Class beginning on Oct. 20. This class will help prepare participants to take the GED test. The class will be held from 4–7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

A certified teacher teaches the class and each participant will receive individualized instruction geared toward their needs. All materials are provided. To find out more or to enroll, call Marsha at 883-6355, ext. 601.

Rehberg staffer

Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, announced his congressional field representative, Larry Anderson, will be conducting traveling office hours in Ronan and Polson on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

In Ronan, Anderson will hold office hours at 1:30 p.m., at the Ronan Community Hall, 300 3rd Avenue Northwest.

In Polson, Anderson will hold office hours at 4 p.m., at the Lake County Courthouse, 106 4th Avenue East.

Jette Meadows meeting

The Jette Meadows/Lake County Water and Sewer District has scheduled its October monthly meeting for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Polson Library Community Meeting Room. The date was changed from the normal fourth Monday meeting date  because  scheduling conflicts made it impossible for some members attend. The main  item of discussion will be  what to do about a   a draft management plan required by the Treasure State Endowment Program, the state  financing agency, which is needed prior to proceeding with  the  construction project, and whether to hrie a project manager or compliance officer to draft the plan.  An update on design completion, and scheduling of advertisements for bids on the project, will also be discussed. As always, the public is encouraged to attend all district meetings,  and public comment and discussion is encouraged. Bison hunt orientation

The Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes announce the third series of 2009 off Reservation wild bison hunter orientations. Each hunter is required to attend an orientation with the Division of Fish, Wildlife, Recreation and Conservation to be issued one bison hunt tag. The orientation will be offered at noon, 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Mission Valley Power conference room in Pablo.Contact Amanda Bourdon, Tribal Permit Agent, at 675-2700, ext. 7226 to register for the orientation.

Wildlife board meeting

The Flathead Reservation Fish and Wildlife Board will meet on at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the National Bison  Range near Moiese. The major item on the agenda is a report by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service on 2008 accomplishments and 2009 projects.  According to Board Chairman Sid Rundell, the public is encouraged to attend and ask questions or express their views.

One Nation, Under Stress

Native Voices to screen new films

Two new award-winning films that deal with the impacts that government boarding schools had in Native lives, and the images of Native women in the media will be screened at Salish Kootenai College in the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theatre with a program beginning at 6 p.m. and the films at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23.  Native Voices producers Luana Ross and Daniel Hart will lead live discussions of these powerful new works. The screenings are co-sponsored by Native Voices and KSKC Public TV.

Jonkel headlines bear program

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, KSKC Public TV will co-sponsor a program with the Great Bear Foundation featuring Dr. Charles Jonkel.

Jonkel will speak about the bears of North America; their physiology and evolution. The program will be held in the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theatre on the campus of Salish Kootenai College in Pablo.

Free Yoga

YogaHeart Studio is offering free yoga every seoncd and fourth Tuesdays from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Introduction/Level 1 Yoga will be at YogaHeart Studio “Purple Door” at 314A Main Street in Polson.

MM winery Ocktoberfest

Mission Mountain Winery encourages all wine lovers to attend our free Ocktober Festevent from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. This is a part of the winery’s continuing program to educate the community about the pleasurable synergies created by the pairing of food and wine. Keeping in spirit with October Fest, we will be serving a large variety of sausages and chocolates. This is also our annual vertical tasting of Pinot Noir wines giving you the opportunity to sample older vintages and our current release . Mission Mountain Winery is located on Highway 93 in Dayton on the west shore of beautiful Flathead Lake.

Harvest Dinner

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold is annual Harvest Dinner of Swedish meatballs, potatoes and gravy, lefse, salad and pie from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 in the church fellowship hall. We will not have crafts this year in order fo have more dining room. Crafts will be featured at the December cookie walk. Fair trade coffee is available for sale. Low cost tickets as well, which will beneit fht food pantry and Helping Hands.

Monster Mash Fun Run

The Monster Mash Fun Run will be held at Linderman Elementary School with races beginning at 10 a.m. on Satuday, Oct. 31. St. Ignatius child find

Apple Festival

Immaculate Conception Apple Festival and Parking Lot Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 23-24. Fresh apple pies, art and crafts will be available, along with a lunch service on Friday. Harvest Festival

The Ronan PTA is sponsoring it’s annual Harvest Festival from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at K. William Harvey Elementary Gym. Admission is free. Donations of candy are welcomed. Games and prizes galore! Snacks are available for minimal cost. Hope to see everyone there!

Community Spirit Basket

Community Bank is hosting and sponsoring the third annual Community Spirit Basket project. Merchants or individuals are asked to donate a basket filled with items representing their business or organization.  Baskets will then go on display Nov. 2 through Dec. 10 in the designated Community Bank lobby of their choice. Soroptimist scholarship

Soroptimist International of Polson is committed to making a difference for women through projects that help women and girls lead better lives.  To that end we participate in the Violet Richardson Award program.  The program began in 1999 and recognizes and honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. The Violet Richardson Award honors women between 12 and 17 who make the world a better place. The program begins at the local Soroptimist club level where in Polson the award is $1,100, with 75 percent going to honor the winner and the other 25 percent going to the winner’s volunteer organization. Applications have been made available at high schools in Polson, Ronan, Charlo, Two Eagle River and St. Ignatius, or by contacting Maria Bishop, Violet Richardson Award chair at 883-5372 or 883-0417. Applications are due  on Dec. 1.

Aging care classes

Western Montana Area V1 Agency of Agin will conduct a free, six-part training program to enable family caregivers to better care for themselves  by improving self-confidence and problem solving skills. Classes are being for 10-11:30 a.m. beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 13, running through Nov. 17 at Community bank in Polson. Two experienced leaders will conduct each class, space is limited. Halloween party

Heart View Center in Arlee is hosting the Fourth Annual free community Halloween party. It will be from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.  There will be games geared toward younger kids (primarily third grade and under), but everyone is invited to attend. Food safety advisory group

A Food Safety Advisory Group is being established by the Lake County Environmental Health Department. This committee will discuss a variety of topics related to how food served to the public can be protected through education, regulation, certification and other means.  The group is anticipated to be comprised of members of the public, food service industry, county and tribal environmental health department, Lake County Board of Health, and MSU Extension.  Those interested in participating may contact the Lake County Environmental Health Department by October 15th, 883-7236 or visit the website:  http://www.lakecounty-mt.org/envhealth/foodservice.

Baertsch scholarship

L. G. Baertsch scholarship applications are available at First Interstate Bank - Trust Department or at the Polson High School guidance office beginning on Sept. 5. Applications are due back to the bank by Monday, Nov. 16. Applicants must be former PHS students currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or trade school.  They must have at least a 2.0 grade point average for two semesters if enrolled in a four-year college or university, or for one semester at a two-year college or trade/vocational school.

Sjogrens support group

Sjogrens syndrome is an autoimmune disease that causes certain parts of the immune system to attack and damage the glands of the body and can also damage other organs, causing a variety of symptoms.

We would like to start a support group in Polson and the surrounding areas. A great deal can be learned from others and the national foundation. If you’re interested, call Jo Weaver at 883-5401.

Lion King bus

Community Bank is sponsoring a trip to the Saturday evening, Dec. 5 performance of Broadway’s Award-Winning Best Musical “The Lion King.” The seating for the play will be in the orchestra section rows 10-13. Overnight accommodations will be at Spokane’s premier hotels, The Davenport. The bus will depart at Community Bank in Polson at 8:30 a.m., Ronan 9 at a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 and return Dec. 6.
