Nix resort tax

Got to get my three cents worth in on the proposed resort sales tax that we Polson voters are going to vote for or against on Nov. 3.

 My feeling is that in view of the uncertain financial future for the average Polson taxpayer, we don’t need another tax added to the anticipated increased tax bill that is already looming thanks to the recent property reclassification.

 Expected increased gasoline heating oil  prices, the uncertain impact of health care costs, higher food prices, relatively high number of unemployed area residents, the large percentage of people on fixed incomes and minimum wage jobs are all negative factors. Any new tax on those who live here the year round is not a pretty picture.

 A case is made that shows additional money would be available to city government functions and some property tax relief. Apparently Whitefish has had a good experience with the resort sales tax.

But Whitefish has pretty much a year round tourist and recreational season. Polson’s dependable season usually is only three and a half months at best.

 Granted, there are exceptions to some goods and services that would be taxed, but there are also many items on which local residents would have to pay taxes all year long.

 I’ve not been sold on the value or wisdom of the Polson resort sales tax.
