Harvest Festival

The Ronan PTA is sponsoring it’s annual Harvest Festival from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at K. William Harvey Elementary Gym.

Admission is free. Donations of candy are welcomed. Games and prizes galore! Snacks are available for minimal cost. Hope to see everyone there!

Holien book signing

University of Montana sportscaster Mick Holien will sign his Griz memorabilia book from 4:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Crow’s Nest Gallery in Polson. Hors d’oeuvre will be served.

Friday, Oct. 30

Free costume dance

Come to a free kids costume dance for kids 12 and under from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, upstairs at the Polson VFW Hall. For more information contact Nancy Hauserman at 883-5160. There will be free food, costume contests, games and prizes.

Pumpkin painting contest

Submit pumpkins for the 2009 Pumpkin Painting contest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27-28 at First Interstate Bank, there are four divisions from age 5 through 99. Prizes will be awarded on Saturday, Oct. 31 in the Linderman Cafeteria after the Monster Fun Run. Trick or treating will be downtown with participating merchants from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30.

Commissioner meeting

City Commissioner candidate Murat Kalinyaprak will host a town hall meeting on from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Polson Library meeting room (2 First Avenue East).

Monster Mash Fun Run

The Monster Mash Fun Run will be held at Linderman Elementary School with races beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Volunteers are needed for this event, call Lori Russell at 883-2237 or e-mail lrussell@polson.k12.mt.us for more information. Registration forms are available at Polson schools. Costumes are highly encouraged.

Community Harvest Fest

The Destiny Christian Center is hosting the 11th Annual Community Harvest Fest from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Ronan Community Center. There will be free games, fun and food. Contact Dernell at 676-3367 for more information.

Halloween party

Heart View Center in Arlee is hosting the Fourth Annual free community Halloween party. It will be from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.  There will be games geared toward younger kids (primarily third grade and under), but everyone is invited to attend.

As always, the party is funded solely on donations from local businesses and organizations. If people have questions or want more info they can call 726-4460.

Anura baby costume contest

In celebration of Halloween, Polson’s premier natural children’s store, The Anura, will be holding the First Annual Anura Baby Halloween Costume Contest on from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Halloween day at the store located at 217 Main Street in Downtown Polson. The costume contest is for children ages 0 to 6 years, but everyone is welcome to come and join in on all the ghoulish festivities.

Sign Language Class Offered

 The Adult Education program of the Polson School District is offering a free Introduction to Sign Language class.

The class will be held  from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Nov. 2, 9, and 16. All materials are provided.

Republican women’s meeting

The Lake County Republican Women’s Club will hear Linda Johnson, taxpayer activist from Kalispell,  speak on her experiences at the Belgrade Tea Party rally in August when President Obama spoke and at the Taxpayer March on Washington, D.C. in September.

The Nov. 2 meeting is at Papa Don’s Grill at the golf course in Polson. The buffet is open at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at noon. Call Mimi at 849-5944 or Lynette at 849-5083. Zone Cafe breakfast

Zone Cafe hosting a breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m. Mondays through the winter at Lake City Bakery. Pancakes eggs and a daily special will be featured. Proceeds will benefit will Zone Cafe and other missions.  Dan Gingerich at 471-3938.

Junior bowling signups

Junior bowling signup will be after school on Monday, Nov. 2 at SportsPage Bowl for ages 6 through high school. Cost determined by age group. Bowling will begin the week of Nov. 9. For more information call Kaye Stam at 883-4480.

Jette Meadows Special Meeting

Jette Meadows/Lake County Water and Sewer District will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, at the Polson City Library Meeting Room. As always, public comment is welcome and interested members of the public, especially Jette Meadows residents, are urged to attend.

The newly reorganized district board will discuss what form a project management plan should take with special reference to hiring a financial compliance officer from outside the district or keeping financial compliance review in-house. 

A management plan is required to assure the district can receive a $750,000 construction grant from the Montana Department of Commerce, as well as other funding for the $1.9 million project, which must begin  by Feb. 1.

Former President John Stromnes’ term expires at the end of November, and he has chosen not to serve another four-year term.

At the October meeting, Stromnes suggested the district replace him as president at the October meeting  to ensure continuity as the district begins its major construction project. 

District Director Russell Barber was unanimously elected president, and began his term effective upon Stromnes’ resignation at the adjournment of the October meeting.

The regular meeting of the water district remains scheduled for Monday, Nov. 23, tentatively  at the same time and place.

BCH meeting

The Mission Valley Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the VFW Hall, on Round Butte Road in Ronan.

The program for the evening will be presented by the Lake Co. Sheriff’s Office, regarding the issuing of permanent identification numbers for personal property, including our tack, in case of loss or theft.

Inside Out shown

Roy Big Crane from SKC Public TV will show “Inside Out” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. 

Please tell your friends, community leaders, teens, other organizations about these showings about RESPECT clubs in schools and how kids feel about them.

We’re trying to get such clubs started up here on the reservation.

Also, note on your calendar that FRHRC, together with NCBI and MT Safe Schools Coalition are doing Safe Schools Workshop (gay issues and how to keep everyone safe in school) at Mission Valley UMC, top of Post Creek Hill,  from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 17. There will be continuing ed credits offered.

Totally free to FRHRC and to participants. This is for public schools, community organizations, private schools, colleges, job corps, suicide prevention, domestic violence shelters and staff, P-FLAG groups, and anyone else you can think of where they need to know how to handle discrimination of any kind.

The principles are the same for all discrimination.

Polson Speech and Debate

Polson will host an invitational speech, debate and drama meet on Saturday, Nov. 7. More tham 300 students from 15 schools from the western part of the state are expected. Adult judges from the community are needed. If anyone would like to volunteer, please call the high school and head coach Judie Woodhouse at 883-6350 ext. 217 and leave a message. Home school meeting

Mission Valley Home Educators will be meeting for their First Friday Fellowship with a potluck dinner, fellowship, announcements and an information exchange at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, at the New Life Christian Center in Polson. For this meeting, we are planning a “Home School Market,” sharing various home businesses, crafts, baked goods, and other creations. Feel free to bring any contributions of your own and/or do some early Christmas shopping! Those new to home schooling, veteran home educators, and anyone interested in pursuing the idea of teaching their own children are all invited to participate. The Mission Valley United Methodist Church on top of Post Creek Hill will host a Harvest Dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. All proceeds go to valley-wide community causes. Sponsored by the Mission Valley United Methodist Churcha dn Ronan Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Leon pancake dinner

Leon Community Club members are flipping out! From 4-7 p.m on Friday, Nov. 13, come savor a pancake dinner at the Leon Clubhouse. Fresh off the grill will be Leon’s famous pancakes, sausages, bacon and eggs for a small fee. Take this opportunity to free yourself from wondering what to fix for your family for dinner, and come enjoy this community get-together and fundraiser. People’s Center closure

The Museum will be closed on Friday’s through the months of November and December to allow center staff to clean, rotate and photograph exhibits. The museum will remain open Monday through Thursday, Oct. 29 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as scheduled. If you would like to schedule a visit or tour Mondays through Thursdays please call 675-0160.

Youth home fundraiser

Big Productions, a fundraising adventure of the Lake County Youth Home, is bringing a wild and crazy night of music and fun to the Ronan Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Mud Bay Jugglers and the Tune Stranglers will collaborate on the first set and the Tune Stranglers will go it alone in the second half of this frolicking show co-sponsored by the Total Home in Ronan.

 First the Mud Bay Jugglers: This startlingly inventive troupe juggles genres as easily as objects, weaving theatre, dance, physical comedy, and juggling into a creative and infectious entertainment experience.Tickets are available from Fiddle Sticks School of Music or Shannon Nunlist Physical Therapy on main street in Polson or from True Value Hardware or Main Street Gallery and Framing in Ronan.  Concertgoers can also get tickets by emailing cmc@ronan.net or calling 800-823-4386.

Veteran’s Day Celebration

A Veterans Day Celebration and Concert will be held at the Ronan Middle School Event Center at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11.  Colors will be posted at 7 p.m. This event is free of charge, and is sponsored by your Merchants in the Mission Valley.  

Linda Lanier will be the presenter. You are warmly invited to this special evening honoring the Mission Valley’s men and women who have served and are serving in the armed forces. There is NO charge and you will also be treated to ice cream and cookies.  Plan on being there and thank a veteran. You will be proud you did!

Women’s award nominees sought

Women’s Opportunity Award is for women who are the financial head of their household and wish to further their educational or vocational training but do not have the financial resources to do so. The award may be used for tuition, books or other costs associated with her education like childcare or car expenses. The award recipient receives $1,500 and the runner-up receives $1,000 respectively.  The recipient will also become eligible to receive more money in regional and international Soroptimist competition. The application is due December 15.  If you are interested in applying or know a woman who fits the requirements for this award, contact Karen Radcliff at 250-2420. Soroptimist International is a volunteer service organization for women who work to improve the lives of women, girls and children in local communities and throughout the world.

Oversight meeting

Our next oversight is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Nov. 25, in Polson at the Lake  County Health  Building. We will enjoy a great lunch and company of each other.

The Oleta Smith Endowment Fund

The Oleta Smith Endowment is open for grant applications. The fund is endowed by the late Oleta “Pete” Smith who was a long time human rights activist and environmental advocate. Proposals should address activities that promote positive relations among people and focus on the Flathead Indian Reservation area. Grant proposals should not exceed $3,000.

Volunteer positions available

Lake County is accepting applications for the following board positions. The positions begin on January 1, 2010.

Postions available on: The Lake County Planning Board is comprised of volunteers who advise the Lake County Commissioners on planning issues.  The Board regularly meets on the second Wednesday of each month to review and make recommendations to the County Commissioners on subdivision proposals and to work on long range planning documents such as local subdivision and zoning regulations, as well as the County Growth Policy.  Applicants from all parts of the county are encouraged to apply. The Lake County Board of Adjustment is comprised of five volunteers who hear and decide land use and zoning related issues such as conditional land uses, variance requests and citizen appeals. The Polson City/County Planning Board is comprised of volunteers who advise the City and County on planning issues, which typically include subdivisions, special use permits and zoning regulations within the Polson Planning Area. Applications for the above referenced positions may be submitted to the Lake County Planning Department prior to November 19, 2009. The application should include a letter of interest and brief background history detailing experience relevant to the review of land use and growth management issues. Fall bazaar

The annual fall bazaar and luncheon at the First United Methodist Church of Polson is on Friday, Nov. 6.  Homemade crafts and bake goods are sold from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  A lunch of soup, sandwiches, apple dumplings and ice cream is served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.  United Methodist Women sponsor the event and use proceeds for local and church-wide mission projects. The church is located at 301 16th Ave. E.

Warrior Society powwow

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Veteran Warrior Society will be holding it’s 17th annual Veterans Pow wow on Nov. 13-14, at the Joe McDonald Activities Center in Pablo.  This years powwow will be honing all of the past and present VWS Honor Guard members; with special recognition of John Wheeler and Richard Nichols members who passed away during active Honor Guard service. Grand Entries are 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday.  A feed will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday also at the Joe McDonald Activities Center for veterans, their families as well as the drummers and dancers. Jocko Valley Library fall hours

Fall/Winter Hours are Monday, 2- 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Wednesday. 1-4 p.m.; Thursday, 3-6 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, 9:30 -11:30 a.m. (Only open the first and second Saturdays of each month.) The mentioned hours are filled by community volunteers and are subject to change without notice. Please feel free to return your checked out materials by putting them in the drop-box at the front gate of the library. The books are perfectly safe in that drop-box and it will save you from accruing a fine.

Reduced meal applicants sought

On Nov. 2, the Polson School District is launching a new breakfast program at the High School: Grab and Go Breakfast. Students will have a choice of healthy and delicious breakfast foods, packaged in a paper bag. The Polson School District is encouraging all qualifying parents to apply for the Free and Reduced Meal program. Many sources of government funding, as well as private grants, are based on the Free and Reduced Meal count. Applications are available at all schools, the district office or can be downloaded from the district’s web site: www.polson.k12.mt.us. A family of four may qualify if they have an adjusted gross income of $40,793 or less. Families of other sizes can consult the sliding scale to see if they qualify. Mashumola Club meeting

 The November 2009 meeting of the Masumola Club will be held on Thursday, Nov. 22 and will feature the following: social hour from 5:45-6:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Lady of the Lake Dancers, dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m. with Doug Wold presenting  a slide show on the Steamboats of Flathead lake. The clubhouse is located on Masumola Road. Turn onto Rocky Point Rd off Hwy 93 and Masumola is a right turn after the 3 mile marker. The clubhouse is 1/4 mile down the road. Anyone in the community of Polson and the surrounding area is invited to attend this meeting as a guest or to join the club and enjoy friendship, meetings, and interesting programs.  The only requirement for new guests is to bring your own utensils and a dish to pass, if you wish. One Nation, Under Stress

Free Yoga

YogaHeart Studio is offering free yoga every seoncd and fourth Tuesdays from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Introduction/Level 1 Yoga will be at YogaHeart Studio “Purple Door” at 314A Main Street in Polson.

Community Spirit Basket

Community Bank is hosting and sponsoring the third annual Community Spirit Basket project. Merchants or individuals are asked to donate a basket filled with items representing their business or organization.  Baskets will then go on display Nov. 2 through Dec. 10 in the designated Community Bank lobby of their choice. Soroptimist scholarship

Soroptimist International of Polson is committed to making a difference for women through projects that help women and girls lead better lives.  To that end we participate in the Violet Richardson Award program.  The program began in 1999 and recognizes and honors young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. The Violet Richardson Award honors women between 12 and 17 who make the world a better place. The program begins at the local Soroptimist club level where in Polson the award is $1,100, with 75 percent going to honor the winner and the other 25 percent going to the winner’s volunteer organization. Applications have been made available at high schools in Polson, Ronan, Charlo, Two Eagle River and St. Ignatius, or by contacting Maria Bishop, Violet Richardson Award chair at 883-5372 or 883-0417. Applications are due  on Dec. 1.

Aging care classes

Western Montana Area V1 Agency of Agin will conduct a free, six-part training program to enable family caregivers to better care for themselves  by improving self-confidence and problem solving skills. Classes are being for 10-11:30 a.m. beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 13, running through Nov. 17 at Community bank in Polson. Two experienced leaders will conduct each class, space is limited. Baertsch scholarship

L. G. Baertsch scholarship applications are available at First Interstate Bank - Trust Department or at the Polson High School guidance office beginning on Sept. 5. Applications are due back to the bank by Monday, Nov. 16. Applicants must be former PHS students currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or trade school.  They must have at least a 2.0 grade point average for two semesters if enrolled in a four-year college or university, or for one semester at a two-year college or trade/vocational school.

Sjogrens support group

Sjogrens syndrome is an autoimmune disease that causes certain parts of the immune system to attack and damage the glands of the body and can also damage other organs, causing a variety of symptoms.

We would like to start a support group in Polson and the surrounding areas. A great deal can be learned from others and the national foundation. If you’re interested, call Jo Weaver at 883-5401.

Lion King bus

Community Bank is sponsoring a trip to the Saturday evening, Dec. 5 performance of Broadway’s Award-Winning Best Musical “The Lion King.” The seating for the play will be in the orchestra section rows 10-13. Overnight accommodations will be at Spokane’s premier hotels, The Davenport. The bus will depart at Community Bank in Polson at 8:30 a.m., Ronan 9 at a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 and return Dec. 6.
