WEEKEND UPDATE Charlo spikers going strong

| September 14, 2009 12:00 AM

Despite inconsistencies, the Charlo volleyball team took third in the Phillipsburg tournament last weekend.

“We were very inconsistent,” head coach Sheryl Kain said. “We didn't do how I thought we would.”

In the morning, Charlo beat St. Regis 15-10, 15-5 and Victor 15-0, 15-8 before splitting with Gardiner 15-14, 11-15.

“We had good moments and a lot of bad moments that just didn't help us,” Kain said. “Everybody had their errors and everybody had their great hits.”

In the afternoon, Charlo was in fourth place and beat St. Regis 20-5, 20-15 before losing to Sheridan 21-19, 17-20, 15-6 and went on to face Gardiner.

Kain said Charlo was excited to play Gardiner because of the history between the two teams. Last year, Gardiner beat Charlo in this tournament and the two teams played in Divisionals.

This time, Gardiner won 15-20, 11-20.

“We didn't play like we can,” Kain said. “I don't know if it was physical or emotional tiredness. Every team is in the same boat. Some teams do better in the morning.”

On the weekend, Charlo had 89 aces total, senior outside hitter Jaris Kelley led the team with 26. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Maughan led the team in aces with eight, digs with 47 and blocks with three.

Up next, the Vikings host Arlee tonight.

Kain said her team isn't going to overlook them because of their age.

“They have [senior outside hitter] Chelsea Allaire, [junior outside hitter] Melissa Ivanoff and [sophomore hitter] Cortney Dix,” Kain said.

A friendly competition between the two coaches is expected.

“[Arlee head coach Brian Bigsam] wants to beat me and I want to beat him,” Kain said.
