Bird day

International Migratory Bird Day at the National Bison Range.

The National Bison Range will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 8, 2010. In celebration, there will be a number of family-oriented activities available.

The big event of the day is the opening of Red Sleep Mountain Drive for the summer season, weather and road conditions permitting, of course. This is a 19-mile, one-way gravel road which climbs 2,000 feet to the high point of the range and descends along steep, 10 percent graded hills. Because it travels through a variety of habitats, including grassland and forest, the scenic drive is a great place to see a broad spectrum of birds, as well as abundant wildlife and wildflowers. As an extra bonus, expect to catch a glimpse of baby bison among the herds.

We are especially pleased to announce that Robert Petty, artist of the 2010 Bird Day Poster, will be on hand to autograph his work. Bob makes his home in the Bitterroot Valley and works for the National Audubon Society. Donald M. Jones, wildlife photographer from Troy, will also be available through lunch to autograph his spectacular photo books.

Afternoon demonstrations will help you discover how to attract birds to your backyard - bird feeding, habitat, nest boxes. And find out how to attract native pollinators - including native bees and butterflies - to complete your backyard environment. Additional activities for the day include special bird video showings, trivia contests, coloring pages, and free posters.

Visitors can attend a number of activities. Sign up for Beginning Birding, an easy walk along Mission Creek to see which birds have returned for the spring. Wildlife photographer and author Donald M. Jones will lead a wildlife photography program in the afternoon. Bring your camera and your questions. Other walks may be added at a later date and all of these trips have limited space so preregistration is required. Call the National Bison Range at (406) 644-2211, ext. 207 for more information and to register.

The Refuge and its scenic drives will open at 6:30 a.m. Visitors coming in the evening will need to start Red Sleep Mountain Drive by 6 p.m. to complete the trip before the Refuge closes at dark.
