The health care law and you
How much do you know about the new health care law? Have you read it? With so many myths and misinformation surrounding this law, it’s easy to be confused about how it will impact you and your family.
Brushfires of Freedom is hosting Robert Brown from the John Birch Society to discuss the new health care law and what it means to you.
Please join us for this special presentation at 7 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the Garden of the Rockies Museum meeting room, located at 400 Round Butte Road West, in Ronan.
Robert will show a DVD explaining the bill and its impact, and will also introduce a comprehensive action plan that concerned citizens can implement to prevent the health care bill from negatively impacting Montanans and Montana businesses.

Community dinner
Fellowship Baptist Church will be having a free community dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 26.
We will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, assorted salads and desserts. Our church is located on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Main Street across from the HCP building. We hope to see you there.

Polson Middle School will have its open house for grade five to eight from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Pachyderm Club
meeting
Judge Nels Swandal, candidate for Justice of the Supreme Court, will be the guest speaker at the Lake County Pachyderm Club Aug. 27 in the Community Room of the Polson City Library. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting starting at noon and ending at 1 p.m.
Everyone interested in learning more about Judge Swandal and this non-partisan election of Justice to the Montana Supreme Court is encouraged to attend the meeting of the Lake County Pachyderms and should bring a friend. Also bring a brownbag lunch!
Sandpiper Art Gallery new show
The “Through the Lens and by the Hands” show opens Friday at the Sandpiper Art Gallery and Gift Shop. Everyone is invited to a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.
Featured artists include Eugene Beckes, Jay Cross, and Donald Stein (photography), Martin Mumma (turned wood bowls and vessels) and Lee Proctor (blown glass).

Dixon Melon Days
Join the city of Dixon for the 19th annual Dixon Melon Days Aug. 27 through 29.
The festival provides fun for the entire family. Activities include a parade, one mile, two mile, three mile run/walk, food booths, old time kids and adult games, live entertainment, silent auction, farmer Olympics, horseshoes, little buckaroo rodeo and the best melons in western Montana.
Doug and Cheryl Morigeau have been named the Grand Marshals of the 2010 Dixon Melon Days parade that begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the school.

The Polson Police Department, the Polson Fire Department and the Polson Walmart invite the public to the Ninth Annual Safety Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 28 in the Walmart parking lot.

Shakespeare in the Park
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will perform “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” during its 2010 tour of 75 performances in 60 communities throughout this summer with its stop at Palmer’s Park, north of Charlo off of Hwy 212, at 6 p.m. Aug. 28. In the case of rain, the performance will be moved to the Charlo Schools.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. It features fairies, a magical forest, a love story and mistaken identity.

Fifth Sunday Sing
Please join us at the Ronan Christian Church Aug. 29 for the Fifth Sunday Sing. The address is 121 Third Ave. S.W. in Ronan, across from the Post Office.
Starting at 6:30 p.m., there will be an hour of heartfelt singing of hymns and solos.
At 7:30 p.m., the group will move downstairs for a potluck dinner, so bring your favorite potluck dish, and roast beef will be provided.
We hope you can come to enjoy fellowship with good friends and neighbors. All are welcome.
Centennial event

The Aug. 29 “Homestead Women” program, a Polson Centennial event, is cancelled but will be re-scheduled in 2011, along with many more programs and tours. The Polson Flathead Historical Museum’s board thanks you for the part you played during this historical year. The museum remains open to the public through Labor Day weekend.
Shakespeare in the park
Montana Shakespeare in the Park will present “Julius Caesar” at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 St. Ignatius. The play will be presented at the Amphitheater at Good Old Days Park. Pet fair
An outdoor Pet Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 29 at South Shore Veterinary Clinic. The annual community event is free of charge and includes live music, vendors, AKC-sanctioned dog testing and exhibits. All vaccinated pets are welcome to attend the fair, which promotes responsible pet ownership.
Among this year’s wildlife exhibits will be a golden eagle, an alligator, hawks, and an owl. “Madison” the African Spurred Tortoise will be on hand, as will rabbits, rats, cats, and dogs. There will be a “Name the Eagle” contest, which anyone may enter.
Local dog trainer Karen Duty will be testing dogs for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy programs.

Elks dance
Waltz night is Sept. 1 at the Elks. Bring your partner, your friend or just grab someone to trip the light fantastic and enjoy the extra waltzes played by Heart to Heart along with their other tunes. Ballroom style is the fare for every dance. Refreshments will be served.
FBC meeting
Members of the Flathead Basin Commission (FBC) will have its business meeting/retreat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the Flathead Lake Biological Station at Yellow Bay. The FBC members will discuss its Strategic Plan and priorities for the upcoming year.
The Flathead Basin Commission was established by the Montana Legislature in 1983 to “monitor and protect” the water quality of the Flathead River drainage system. For more information, contact the FBC at 437-2479.

Sixth Annual Noble/Bailey Reunion
It is that time again for the Noble/Bailey Family reunion. We are going back to our roots this year and gathering at the Valley View Clubhouse starting Friday late afternoon/evening, Sept. 3.
Bring your campers and tents and plan to spend the weekend. Don’t forget the pictures and stories to share too. We plan on serving breakfast Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings. Saturday night, Rick is heading up the barbecue and Sunday will be potluck as usual.

Jocko Valley Trails Committee meeting
The Jocko Valley Trails Committee of the Arlee Community Development Corp. will be starting up its fall monthly meeting schedule with the next meeting being held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 4 at the Hangin’ Art Gallery in Arlee.
There will be a general discussion of the summer’s trails planning activities, reports on recent meetings with various officials, both Tribal and State, and a discussion of future directions.
Anyone having an interest in trails planning and development in the Arlee Valley is encouraged to attend. For further information, call 726-4149, evenings.

Mission Mountain
Quilt Guild
The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will hold its first meeting of the “new year” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Ronan.
Please bring the final block of the month for September.
We will be doing challenge quilts this year using fabric to be handed out at this meeting. Carl Rohr is in charge of education — expect some fun and educational meetings this year!
The theme for the 2011 Quilt Show is “Barnyard dance at the County Fair” so be thinking of what kind of a quilt you can make for next summer’s show! There will be changes made this year — please come and have a good time, everyone is welcome!
