POLSON — Before entering the dual against Ronan, the Pirates beat Columbia Falls last Tuesday 54-27.

“We wrestled real well that match,” Owen said.

The Pirates won four matches by forfeit and earned four pins.

Freshman Pat Sumner pinned Columbia Falls’ Seth McCall, who is ranked sixth in the weight class, in the second period of the 105 match.

Junior Jacob Young had the quickest pin over Brendon Mosemen, with a 54-second stop.

Senior Brock Picard and sophomore Nick Howell also added pins for Polson.

Another big win came when freshman Nate Brooks won a 3-1 decision over Cole Thompson.

“That was a big win for him,” Owen said. “It will help his seeding for divisionals.”

Having the divisional tournament in Polson is one advantage for the Pirates. Less traveling and more positive support always makes a difference, Owen said.

Another advantage for Polson is that teams can bring four additional wrestlers.

However, it will be a tough decision for Owen and company to decide who to bring. For a dual match, the two wrestlers face off and the winner goes to the dual. For divisionals, Owen said he can’t do that.

“You can’t wrestle a 98-pounder and a heavyweight to see who will go,” he said.

The biggest competition for the crown will come from Ronan as the one-day tournament on Saturday decides who goes to state and who stays home.
