Relay for Life kickoff

The 2010 Relay for Life kickoff event will be held in three locations on Thursday, Jan. 14: the SKC dining area from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Polson First Interstate Bank from 5-6:30 p.m and Harvest Foods in Ronan from 5-6:30 p.m. The first 10 teams to register will receive a birthday bag. Home school geography bee

The annual Home School Geography Bee will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, at the New Life Christian Center in Polson. Please assemble in the waiting room next to the New Life Bookstore and look for signs. This bee is for home schooled students in grades 4-8, but all ages are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the preliminary, practice rounds. Students (and parents!) need not be proficient in geography to enjoy this get-together, as it is always a fun and educational experience. For more information, please call Ann Murphy at 849-5413.

SKC MLK activities

Salish Kootenai College will once again host a week long celebration honoring the work and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Thursday, Jan. 14, SKC’s Annual Diversity Fair will take place at the Camas Room in the McDonald Gymnasium from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Then, in the Johnny Arlee/Victor Charlo Theater at 7 p.m., there will a special awards ceremony, followed by a free community concert at 7:30 p.m. In addition, a MLK Jr. film series will be shown at the SKC Library Tuesday through Thursday from 12-3 p.m. Films will showcase social justice and civil rights topics. Masumola Club meeting

The January 2010 meeting of the Masumola Club will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14 and will highlight the Scottish poet, Robert Burns.  A social hour will be held from 5:45-6:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Shamrockers, a Scottish dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m. with more of the Shamrockers and other “Robert Burns” activities.

VFW meeting

The monthly meeting of Polson VFW 2986 and the Ladies Auxiliary will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, at the VFW Hall 423 Main St.

Coalition collaboration meeting

A coalition collaboration meeting for individuals from public and private organizations whose focus is health promotion will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in the Koostahtah Room of the KwaTaqNuk. Property tax meeting

At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, there will be a Lake County town hall meeting for anyone interested in solutions to our property tax problems. Several of the legislators from our area that are working on solutions will join us in the second floor conference room of the Lake County Courthouse in Polson. Enter through the sheriff’s door on the west side of the building. That door has a buzzer to allow entry.

Charlo blood drive

Charlo community blood drive will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Bloodmobile, 401 1st Ave. W. Call Sharon Hertz at 644-2206, ext. 244, for more information or for an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome, ID is required.

‘Among Other Things’ signing

Polson City Library will host a book signing for Polson author Paul Fugleberg from 12-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19. He will be signing his new book, “Among Other Things,” which is Fugleberg’s sixth book.

Wednesday, Jan. 20

ARK beginning

The ARK, after-school program for kids, begins next Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the United Methodist Church, 301 16th Ave. E.  All kids between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to attend from 3:30-5:30 p.m. for five Wednesdays through Feb. 17. Program focus for the ARK will be on “Making a Difference in the World: Social Justice.” Call for more information, 883-6161.

Tester vet liaison in Polson

Sen. Jon Tester’s Veterans’ Liaison, Bruce Knutson and Kalispell Field Director Virginia Sloan and Kalispell Field Representative Amy Croover will visit Polson from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Lake County Court House in the Small Conference Room.

Ronan High School Show Choir will hold a Groundhog Day potato bake from 4-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Event Center commons. A silent auction will be held from 4-6:30 p.m. and the Show Choir will perform at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Call 676-3390, ext. 3400 for more information.

Virginia Reber Public Health Award

The Lake County Board of Health is accepting nominations for the First Annual Virginia Reber Public Health Award. Nominating forms can be obtained from the Lake County Public Health Web site at www.lakecountypublichealth.org or by contacting the Lake County Public Health Department at 883-7288. Monday Night Meals

The Monday Night Meals are still being served at the St. Ignatius Community Center from 5-7 p.m. every Monday. There is no charge for the meals, anyone and families are welcome.

FUMC blood drive

First United Methodist Church of Polson is sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The church is located at 301 16th Avenue East. Donors are reminded to eat complete meals and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating.

Big Game Banquet

It’s time once again for the 15th Annual Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Big Game Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Best Western KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson. Social hour begins at 5 p.m. with lots of games, raffles and the silent auction. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. with the Live Auction following at approximately 8:30 p.m. Join us for all the fun and help benefit our elk resource at the same time! Safety seat check up

Child Safety Seat Check-Up will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Polson Fire Department. Polson-Buckle Up Montana will have technicians  available to provide on-site child safety seat inspections and education. Installation will be reviewed for each child safety seat. Painting classes

The St. Ignatius Adult Ed program will be offering an acrylic painting and color theory class taught by Kathryn Yelsa, an Emmy Award winning artist. Kathryn will teach a six-week comprehensive class that will cover color theory, painting techniques, glazing, washes and

Master gardening class

Library board position open

One position is vacant on the Polson City Library Board of Trustees. City residency and a desire to be involved are required for this volunteer, non-paying position. Those interested can pick-up an application at the library. For more information, please call the circulation desk at 883-8225.

Oriental Dancers Club

Join the Ladies of the Lake Oriental Dancers Club for your new year’s resolution of fun and fitness. Classes begin with strengthening and stretching excercises. Choreographed dances are then taught using many belly dance, ethnic and world dance styles incorporating props such as veils, zills, swords, etc. If you love to laugh and dance (with experience or not), this is the group for you. ‘Share the Vision’

Start out your new year by attending a video showing of Marvin Camels’ world championship matches at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Johnny Arlee and Victor Charlo Theater has been selected for this historical event, the theater is located on the Salish and Kootenai College and next to the Joe Macdonald Events Center in Pablo.

Alzheimer’s support group

An Alzheimer’s support group is beginning in the Mission Valley and will be held at 2:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the United Methodist Church on U.S. Highway 93, south of the Charlo turnoff. For more information call 676-2367 or 644-2363.

Free lunch offered

Faith and Community Outreach Partners are offering a free lunch, Soup’s On!, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday every week at the Wander Inn. Look for the open sign lit up in the window. The lunch will offer homemade soup, pie, bread, coffee, milk and juice served. Dessert follows. The lunch will be ongoing. FCOP is a nonprofit progressive assembly on a journey. We are committed to vibrant worshipping, honest learning, serving, caring and doing good things. Park board member needed

The Lake County Commissioners are looking for a volunteer to serve on the Lake County Park Board. The County Park Board is a volunteer group that advised the Board of Commissioners on management, sale, lease, exchange and disbursement of money or the acceptance of Federal aid having to do with public park land within Lake County’s jurisdiction. The Park Board meetings are as needed called by the Park Board Chairman who is one of the Lake County Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners will accept letters of interest to serve on this Board until Jan. 22. Letters should be addressed to the Commissioners at 106 4th Ave East, Polson, MT 59860. Cemetery board member needed

The Lake County Commissioners are seeking letters of interest to serve on the Lakeview Cemetery Board. This board pays the bills of the cemetery, directs the sexton on general duties, and makes plans for the future of the cemetery. Meetings are held once a month on the second Wednesday of the month. The Board of Commissioners will accept letters of interest to serve on this board until Jan. 22. Letters should be addressed to the Commissioners at 106 4th Ave. East, Polson, MT 59860.
