Fire board approves budget

POLSON - The Polson Rural Fire Board unanimously approved and adopted its preliminary budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year at Wednesday's meeting.

The total came to $125,875, about $2,000 less than last year's $127,950 budget. Not many changes were made, and most costs are normal, every year expenses.

"I think it pretty much tapers to last year," clerk Bonnie Manicke said.

The board also voted to pay $21,000 to get concrete aprons on either side of the Fairgrounds building to replace the gravel currently outside the bay doors.

"I'd like to get this building done and quit worrying about it," board member Steve Stanley, who abstained from the vote, said.

In other news, fire chief John Fairchild reported 17 runs for the fire department in June. He also said he had ordered signs to put up on U.S. Highway 93 near the Big Arm station to warn drivers of fire vehicles entering the roadway.

Board chair Fred Nelson said interested applicants for the vacant board position, last held by Jim Manley, would have until July 31 to submit a letter to the Lake County Commissioners. He said the board would hope to appoint someone by next month's meeting.

The Rural Fire Board will next meet in August for their monthly meeting.

Ronan BOE adds to track

RONAN - The Ronan Board of Education unanimously voted to approve additions to the year-old track, field and football facility during its July 12 monthly meeting.

The construction costs are approximately $30,000, Ronan School District No. 30 Superintendent Andy Holmlund said, while more equipment and storage space could cost around $25,000. Holmlund said the costs were much lower than if the district had included the extra shot put, jump runways, pits and pole vault area in the original plan.

The additions come after some concern was voiced about the size and specifications of the facility by former track coach and current Lake County Superintendent of Schools Gale Decker. Holmlund said additions would still be added and after conferring with track coach Crystal Pitts and athletic director Jim Benn, determined the most pressing needs for next season.

The final agenda item asked for board action to declare trustee Jim Blow's seat vacant. After two years of service Blow resigned from the board as he prepares for a move to West Yellowstone. Blow was thanked for his service and dedication and his position will be open for interested applicants.

The board will next meet in August.
