Senior news, June 24
Polson senior news
With Jo Durand: We would like to thank Clara and Lennie for all their hard work at fishing. Clara fried up the fish Friday, and we all enjoyed the fruits of their labor. It was a delicious fish fry and we hope to do it again later in the summer. Thanks again.
I want to remind everyone that we have some beautiful baby and junior quilts here at the center for sale. Mary and Betty have been busy and there are a lot to choose from. So come on in and take a look. It is well worth it.
June 25 is our monthly birthday dinner. We will be having roast beef and all the fixin’s, so come on down and have lunch with us.
Now for some card scores. The bridge scores for June 15 had Bob Gorsuch first and Paul Doolittle second. Bridge scores for June 18 were Betty Schuba first and Max Neeley second. The pinochle winners were Ward Grilley first and Bob Cooley second.
Menu: Thursday, June 24, BBQ ribs; Friday, June 25, birthday dinner; Monday, June 28, veggie soup and sandwich; Tuesday, June 29, French dip sandwich; Wednesday, June 30, sweet and sour meatballs.
Dixon senior news
With Martha Swonson: The Dixon Senior Center recently smelled of peanut butter, chocolate and oatmeal all baked together in delicious cookies.
Time to head out to the Quartz Flats Rest Area on Interstate 90, a sure sign of summer coming. One afternoon seven to nine members donated time to mix, place on pans, bake and pack about 120 dozen of the treats.
This is a great fundraiser and a delight to travelers, as they take a break for coffee, cookies and conversation. Harvey and Marge Gould and Roy and Delene Tufly took their RVs and did this worthy community service. Many, many thanks to all who helped in this effort. We have another date to repeat this in July.
Mark your calendars for June 25 and the next Dixon dance. Last month’s dance was a great success. We shared the music with the reunion of the former Dixon High School students. They made the Center their reunion headquarters for a special steak dinner, prizes, a tour of the school and much happy visiting.
Remember, our meals are served on Mondays at five o’clock and lunch on Thursdays at noon. Come join us. The Center is open for breakfast and lunch starting at seven a.m. Take outs are available.
How about our touch of hot weather at last! I was able to get all my tomatoes, etc. planted at last! Watch for news of the local farmers markets. I tried some wonderful fresh spinach I purchased at one while I wait for mine to grow.
Arlee Senior citizens
The Arlee Senior Citizens Center board held its regular monthly meeting on June 11 before the noon meal at the center.
Senior Center members sold burgers and hot dogs at the June 11 Arlee Farmers Market to raise money for the Lake County Council on Aging. Free lemonade and coffee were offered to all those who bought the hamburger or hot dog meal. The meal included a bag of chips, pickles and watermelon slices. Bottles of water were also sold. The center will again be selling food at the Arlee Farmers Market on July 2, located in town on Hwy. 93 northbound.
The center was also asked to do concessions during intermission at the annual Arlee Community play on June 26 and 27 in the gym.
Between the raindrops, volunteers are planting vegetable starts at the Arlee Senior Garden. Each year, volunteers plant, weed and harvest produce for the center’s use throughout the year. Fresh, local, organically-grown produce just naturally tastes better!
The Arlee Senior Center affords a central location for parties, those summer reunions or business meetings. The facility has a full kitchen and can seat 80 plus people comfortably. Call 726-3213 for rental details today.
Ronan senior center
A few more days, and the month of June will be behind us. Why is it that the older we get, the faster the days go by and the slower we move? We have had grandchildren visiting us, and I can’t count the number of times I have thought it would be nice to have half of that much energy.
Our roast beef birthday dinner is tomorrow, June 25, so come on in and join us. We will also have live music, so you can eat, visit and reminisce about the “good old days”. The pool tables are always ready, and we will be having bingo after lunch.
We will be closed on Monday, July 5, so our monthly board meeting has been changed to 10 a.m. on July 12. We will also be having our annual meeting at 1 p.m. on July 12. At this meeting, we will be holding elections for the Board of Directors, alternates and officers. If you are a member of the center, please plan on attending. If you’re not at the meeting, we might just vote you into an office.
The Sew and So Club of Round Butte has made another beautiful quilt to be raffled. It is hand-quilted and features squares with the brands of local ranchers, and also has some historical pictures on it.
You must come in and see the quilt to really appreciate it. The proceeds from the raffle will again be split between the Senior Center and the Ronan Volunteer Fire Department.
We are currently selling tickets at the center. The ladies of the Sew and So Club put a lot of time and work into getting these quilts done every year, and we would like to thank them for their generosity.
Menu: Friday, June 25, roast beef; Monday, June 28, beef casserole; Wednesday, June 30, salad bar; Friday, July 2, hamburger patties in beef gravy.
Remember, we will be closed on Monday, July 5, to give our employees a holiday.
Have a good week, enjoy the rain, and if you want to cheer yourself up, try cheering someone else up first.
