CRIMESTOPPERS

STEP to help drive down traffic fatalities

PABLO - The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Police has once again been granted funds from the State Highway Traffic Safety Bureau from the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, says Captain Louis Fiddler in a recent press release.

This is the fourth year that the grateful CSKT Tribal Law and Order police department has received the grant.

STEP grants allows CSKT Law and Order to pay tribal police officers overtime to conduct extra patrols in specified celebratory areas and at noted events, which would otherwise be impossible to do, explains Captain Fiddler.

In an attempt to lower traffic fatalities and increase the use of seat belts, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Police will run saturated patrols in pre-selected areas. The funding will allow the department to pay up to five tribal officers overtime to participate in each patrol.

The patrolled areas are chosen by concentrating on high accident-prone areas, areas where they receive the most traffic complaints, and areas noted for celebrations and/or large gatherings.

STEP requires the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Police to run one patrol per month in the pre-selected areas and also requires a commitment to participate in two national campaigns throughout the year, one being the "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest" and the other being the "Click it or Ticket".

If there is any interest or any questions regarding the STEP program feel free to contact Captain Louis Fiddler at (406) 675-4700, ext. 1107.
