If Polson were to have a Hall of Fame, Carl Seifert certainly deserves a spot at the top. Few individuals in Polson’s business community have had a more influential role in the community’s development. Carl was a man of many interests — businessman, rancher, sportsman and legislator.

When I came to Polson in 1959, I was surprised to see such a young fellow owned and operated the Union 76 gas station and bulk oil plant.

Carl purchased the business soon after graduating from Polson High School. We bought gasoline, fuel oil and tires from him for many years. Integrity, responsibility, dependability and appreciation were the trademarks of his enterprises, which later included Polson Ready Mix and Mission Mountain Realty.

While still operating the service station and bulk plant, he purchased a ranch near the bottom of Sunny Slope Hill and made it a first class operation, raising hay, grain and Registered Hereford cattle. Also, from 1973 until 1982, he was a legislator from Lake County in the House of Representatives. Among his legislative accomplishments was introduction of a resolution that resulted in the funding of the Flathead Basin Commission.

Carl Seifert served his community, county, state and nation well. He’ll be long remembered with appreciation.
