Charlo's Blevins serves up win
CHARLO - When junior Dawn Blevins got up to serve for Charlo, her team was leading 13-1 in the second game of a match last Thursday with St. Regis. She didn't stop serving until Charlo won the second game 25-2 en route to a 3-1 victory.
"She's the best server on the team," said junior Kinley Pope, who actually led the team in aces with 10. "She's the most accurate."
The Lady Vikings (4-0 conf., 7-0 overall) found a killer instinct, and after a 25-18 victory in the first match and the Blevins serving show in the second, they smashed the door shut on St. Regis by winning 25-4.
"I like the fact that they closed it out," Charlo head coach Sheryl Kain said.
Blevins led the team with 14 assists and Pope had nine kills.
"[Blevins] is a lot more confident this year," Kain said. "Very rarely does she make mistakes and she has a calming effect on the team."
She wasn't the only one serving though, as the entire team collected 28 aces in the win.
"I think I'm just used to [staying focused]," Blevins said. "It was one of our best games. We had consistency. That's exactly what we've been looking for."
Last Saturday, the Arlee Spike It Tournament gave a preview for what could be the two top teams in District 10-C at the end of the season. Charlo and Arlee squared off in the second match of the day with the Lady Vikings winning 2-1, with 15-10, 11-15, 10-6 wins.
The small-point counts did make things different for both teams, but Charlo was able to come through with the big third game. Their amount of points scored allowed them to advance to the knockout portion of the tournament.
Charlo also had wins over Seeley, Victor and Lincoln to place third in the tournament.
Charlo will host Noxon at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday.
