RONAN - It had been about two years since a Ronan Maiden scored 17 points in a game until Courtney Clairmont put up that number on Dec. 9. And she made sure Ronan fans didn't have to wait long before they saw it again.

In back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, Clairmont put in 17 points as the Maidens split two games over the weekend.

"She put in time during the offseason, her shot is coming along, she's being aggressive on offense and is seeing the fruits of everything she's done from summer ball," Ronan head coach Clayton Curley said.

On Dec. 16, Ronan got Clairmont's 17, as well as 10 from Ashleigh Lynch, but fell to Florence 84-52.

"It was a learning experience for the kids and for me," Curley said. "As a new coach, I haven't seen these teams play, which puts us a step behind. [Florence is] a run-and-gun team and high tempo. They put two people on the ball and trap everywhere on the court, which gave us a lot of wide open layups. We'll be ready the next time we see them. We took better shots, which is something we've been working on."

Alaina Madsen added eight points for the Maidens, while Ashley Grandchamp scored seven, Raymi Clairmont six and Kianna Howell and Brianna Frank two apiece.

The next night, Ronan battled back from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to squeeze out a 44-39 win over Eureka.

"I told them that's the first time I've seen Ronan come back since I've been here," Curley said. "We talked about the ability to come back, building confidence from this win and start to develop a name for ourselves. It starts with confidence and they're starting to get more."

Eureka led 33-26 after three quarters, but the Maidens put their nose to the grindstone and outscored Eureka 18-6 in the final period to earn the win.

Raymi Clairmont made sure Courtney wasn't the only Clairmont in double figures, as she scored 12 points, while Lynch added six points to move Ronan to 2-2 on the season. Grandchamp contributed five points and Madsen and Howell each scored two to close out the weekend for the Maidens.

The Maidens travelled to Loyola, ranked number one in conference, on Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time.
