Polson grad wins award
Midshipman Logan Torgison, a sophmore (3c) at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, recently received the O’Gara Award. Torgison was chosen as one of six recipients for the $750 prize based on grade point average improvement over the previous year in comparison to classmates. Cash awards are presented to midshipmen from each major, with a bonus award made to the person with the highest increase. The O’Gara Awards are sponsored through the generosity of the late William R. O’Gara, class of 1950, and his wife, Arlyne, who continue to contribute to the academy’s academic support and scholar programs. Torgison is majoring in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation at the federal maritime academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
The United States Merchant Marine Academy is one of the five service academies in the U.S. which include the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo. and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. The academy, which trains young men and women from across the nation for careers in the merchant marine and transportation industry, is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
