Local charity gives dollars to scholars

POLSON — Polson Dollars for Scholars awarded 19 scholarships totaling $19,000 to Polson High School seniors and former Polson High School graduates who are currently attending an accredited two-year community college, four-year university or vocational school.

Scholarships were provided to the following students: Kayla Duford received two $500 dollar scholarships and one $500 scholarship named the Toby Nelson Scholarship sponsored by Amy Nelson. A second scholarship for $500 from the Theiler family who sponsors the John Oberlitner Scholarship. Jose’ Quinones and Danielle Howlett received $1,000 scholarships from the Oberlitner Scholarship. Devln Foubert received the $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Montecatto Club House. Madison Hunter and Sierra Pete each received $1,000 scholarships sponsored by District No. 23 employees. The Class of ’59 Scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Breanne Kelley. Reegan von Wildenradt received the $1,000 scholarship from Polson Dollars for Scholars. A new scholarship for $1,000, sponsored by an anonymous donor, was presented to Zion Lee.

Polson graduates who are currently enrolled in college received the following scholarships: the new Walker Scholarship for a student attending MSU-Bozeman was presented to Rebecca Grant, and a second new scholarship sponsored by the Dr. Keith Nelson family, in memory of Dr. Keith Nelson, was presented to Montana Bull. The Sue Greg Lanier Scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Sara Phillips Keebler. Two $1,000 Fred Barnowsky Memorial Scholarships were presented to Jacob Feister and Carrie Fahlgren Prewitt. The $1,000 Polson Bay Grocery/Kineas-Mahoney Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Gay Luke. The Merle Anderson Scholarship for $1,000 was awarded to Heather Howell and two Polson Dollars for Scholars Continuing Educaction Scholarships were presented to Karissa Koberg and Gina Bjorge.

Polson Dollars for Scholars is a local non-profit organization established in 2002. The purpose of the organization is to expand access to post-secondary educational opportunities for Polson High School graduates. Since its inception Polson Dollars for Scholars has provided 105 students with $91,450 worth of scholarships. Tax-deductible donations and fund-raisers provide the funds for scholarships as well as individuals setting up a scholarship fund in memory of a loved one.
