Veteran assistance

VA staff and veterans service providers will be on hand offering services and assistance to veterans at Veterans Stand Down, presented by the Veterans Warrior Society and the Department of Veterans Affairs Montana Health Care System at the Arlee Powwow grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15. In addition to offering information about employment, housing assistance, legal services, VA benefits, social security and other programs, flu shots will be provided by medical staff. Pachyderm club meets

President of the Montana Policy Institute, Carl Graham, will present “Bridging the Conservative Divide” at the Lake County Pachyderm Club on Friday, Oct. 14. Graham will focus on the need to unite on major messages and reach the middle mass of people who are concerned about our country’s direction but feel underrepresented in the political process. Social time and lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the meeting starting at noon.

Music concert

Off In The Woods, a four-member band from Polson, will celebrate the release of their new CD by holding a free concert on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 7-10 p.m. at the Polson High School auditorium. Band members Jon Schumaker, Nathan Noble, Layne McKay and Sean Burress hope to see you there!

Assessment update

The Flathead Reservation Fish and Wildlife Board will meet to discuss U.S. Fish and Wildlife service accomplishments and future work, as well as present an update on Flathead Lake fisheries co-management environmental assessment on Wednesday, October 19 at 10:00 am at the National Bison Range Headquarters in Moiese. The meeting is open to the public.

Zoning regulations

The North Lake County Planning and Zoning committee is hosting the second of two public information meetings to discuss the draft zoning regulations recently completed on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Bigfork at 7 p.m. For more information, contact Leslie Budewitz at 837-6094.

Ballroom dancing

Do some ballroom dancing at the Elks on Oct. 19 from 7:30-11 p.m. Heart to Heart will be playing music and welcoming requests, so if you’re a fan of the “Golden Oldies” this is the dance for you!

Harvest dinner

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold its annual Harvest dinner of Swedish meatballs, potatoes and gravy, lefse, salad and pie on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 4-7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Share the Spirit and the Polson Food Pantry.

Business meeting

Fort Connah will be hosting a general business meeting open to the public at Ninepipes Lodge on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. They will be reviewing last year’s activities and planning for the upcoming year. For more information, call 381-0759 or 644-2877.

Fun run

The Polson Pirates Monster Mash Fun Run will be held at Linderman Elementary on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. Registration for the one-mile and 5K fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Linderman gym lobby. Stop by any Polson Public School for a registration form, or call 883-6229 for more information. Celebrate Red Ribbon Week and a healthy lifestyle. Costumes Encouraged!

Patch bash

The Pumpkin Patch Bash will be at the Polson High School Gymnasium from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. Sponsored by the New Life Christian Center, this totally free carnival is designed for families with children in the sixth grade or younger. There will be a free family dinner, games, candy and giveaways. Don’t miss this amazing annual event! For more information please call 883-2447.

Grants available

Soroptimist International of Polson would like to announce the grant application process for availability of funding for non-profits that undertake projects benefitting local women and girls. Soroptimist will be considering funding requests ranging from $500 to $1,000. Applicants must be a 501C3, or sponsored by a 501C3. All completed application materials are due by Oct. 28, 2011. Volunteers needed

Cheerful Heart Inc. is searching for volunteers interested in assisting cancer patients. Services include cooking meals, running errands, walking dogs, light yard work and house cleaning, transporting patients to treatment and doctor appointments, offering respite for caregivers, etc. Cheerful Heart, established in 2002, also provides and serves soup at the Polson Oncology Clinic each Tuesday. Those interested in volunteering are asked to call 883-3070 and leave a message. The call will be returned within 24 hours, Monday-Friday.

Magazines needed

Magazines for the Troops needs donations of new or used men’s and women’s interest magazines to be sent to our troops overseas and at aid stations both overseas and stateside. There are now over 150 units we send magazines to monthly. The current donation rate is not able to keep up with the demand for reading materials. Time-sensitive magazines should be no more than three months old.

Please bring your magazines to the drop boxes listed below, or if you have a large number to donate, please feel free to call Esther and Gene Gunlock in Polson at 883-1517, or Donna Chase in Lakeside at 261-9408, and they will make arrangements to pick them up from you personally.

POLSON — Lake County Courthouse (2nd floor), Insty Prints, Walmart Customer Service Area, Super 1 and Safeway stores; PABLO — Pablo Family Foods; RONAN — Harvest Foods, Mission Mart, Lucky Strike Lanes, Mexpress Mexican Restaurant; All Valley Bank of Ronan locations in Polson, Pablo, Ronan and Arlee.

Postage donations are also urgently needed at this time. Coin donation jars are located at the same above locations to help offset the costs of postage, or you may make a tax deductible donation to Magazines for the Troops at P.O.
