Dixon

It’s not that often that Dixon people get together as a community, but there were two occasions in one week which brought an outpouring of interest. Our annual Melon Days celebration has been well reported already and it disappointed me greatly to have missed the annual event.

I spent Saturday trying to locate a doctor to treat an “owie” from falling on my hand. Nothing broken that could be seen, but I’m wearing an eye-catching black laced splint for several weeks. At least it’s my left hand!

Sharon Cole was the winner of the cribbage tournament. (Her delight was increased by defeating her often-opponent, Rudy King, who’s had his share of victories). Another of our seniors, Marie Ardis, was happy to receive an overnight at the Rimrock Lodge and restaurant in Thompson Falls. We were all winners who enjoyed the Dixon Melons. What a treat!

The other gathering of townspeople was an informational meeting regarding the possible closure of the Dixon Post Office. It was very well-intended and produced many questions and answers. Another meeting is expected to allow working people to attend. It’s a good thing to have our center available for such gatherings. It was nice to see Harley Hettick (Mr. Melons) out in his wheelchair, while recuperating from a stroke this summer. Another welcome senior was Faye Pitts, always such an uplifting, cheerful visitor — she could be a poster girl for aging gracefully!

Did you catch the television coverage of Jerry Hamel’s Oreo Cows last week? They are such a special sight — another unique thing about Dixon. It’s worth a trip to National Scenic Highway 200 just east of Dixon to glimpse at these lovely critters.

If you’re thinking about coming celebrations — showers, receptions, reunions, meetings... consider renting the senior center. For more information call Marie Ardis at 246-3528.

September meals coming up will be: Thursday, Sept. 8 Roast beef; Monday, Sept. 12 elk meatballs; Thursday, Sept. 15 Creamed chicken; Monday, Sept. 19 cabbage patch stew.

All ages are welcome to join in meals — Mondays at 5 p.m. and noon on Thursdays. Take-out meals are available. The best deal in town (with home-made bread)! We’ll be expecting you.

Ronan

Now that the last holiday weekend of the summer is over, maybe things will start to slow down a little. Most of the local schools are going now, and with it staying darker longer in the mornings, please be careful of the kids on their way to school.

The yard sale is this Thursday and Friday, so come on down and see what kind of bargains that we have for you. This is a fund-raiser for both COA and the senior citizens to help us maintain our programs for the area seniors. Thanks to all who have donated to this sale, and to all who have helped with it.

Thanks to all who have provided us with fresh produce out of your gardens. We appreciate your generosity, and it helps us out with our food bill.

The Veteran’s rep is here this Thursday (8th) from 1 until 3 in the afternoon, and our evening meal is that evening at 5. We will be serving chicken and all are welcome to join us.

The card party will be held here in Ronan on Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m., and the next foot clinic will be here on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. until noon.

Our condolences to Marie Cowen and Marlys Heoldt on the loss of their family members. We have several members who are not feeling well, and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

Our menu for the following week is: , Friday, Sept. 9 is taco soup, Monday, Sept. 12 is salad bar, Wednesday, Sept. 14 is ham and scalloped potatoes and Friday, Sept. 16 is turkey casserole.

Come on in and join us for some food and fellowship. We serve at noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at 5 p.m on the second Thursday of the month.

We have bingo after lunch on Monday and Friday and the pool table is always ready for use. Have a great week, and enjoy the cooler weather.
