Northfork Notebook
Definitely summer on the North Fork as temps soar, and, families can envision school in a couple of weeks ... where did the summer go?
The Kellogg Silver Hoops 3-on-3 tourney drew many teams from the immediate area, and enjoyed good weather. Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped from scheduling, marketing, striping, scorekeepers, court monitors, medical aid, etc, etc.
This weekend Pinehurst will celebrate its annual Pinehurst Days with a variety of activities to include the ever-popular parade and car show on Saturday. This is the 50th anniversary on the Comancheros, a car club that began in the hallways, study halls and parking lot at Kellogg High School as well as their parents’ garages and businesses. Today members of the Comancheros have put together some of the best lookin’, best runnin’ hot rods, custom cars, and restored vintage vehicles in the Inland Northwest. The car show is a labor of love and many, many volunteer hours and countless meetings are held throughout the season to ensure one of the most popular car shows you’ll ever attend, whether as an owner or a spectator ... It’s a can’t miss activity!
Also, Northside residents will be hostin’ the annual Molly B’Damm Days in Murray. The Saturday-Sunday events will draw hundreds to the former mining town that was once the county seat for what is now Shoshone County. Books and books have been written about the former gold boomtown. Today, Murray hosts one of the best museums you’ll ever visit — thanks to the efforts of the Almquist family for their decades of work.
The North Fork has been very busy as campers, ATVers, fishermen, hikers, floaters and huckleberry pickers descend upon the area. Also in the mix are bear and archery hunters who are scoutin’ their favorite areas in preparation for the upcoming season.
Fishermen have seen good days and other days as river activities as well as high temps slow the trout down and they are off-the-bite. Fly fishermen are utilizin’ hopper patterns as well as attractors like stimulators, humpies, etc. The St. Joe has been fishin’ very well as a number of anglers that Rich at the Valley Fishin’ Hole talked with ealier this week had a very good outing utilizin’ spoons ... mentioned they were catchin’ trout almost every cast. The Chain Lakes as well as Lake Cd’A are in the summer dog days so-to-speak, but there are quite a few pike being caught. Understand there was a pic of an angler on Lake Cd’A in the paper with a 30-pound pike in hand ... Have spoken to some anglers that have had good luck catchin’ smallmouth bass around structures.
One of our neighbors rode the Trail of The Cd’As from Enaville to Harrison and back midweek ... mentioned he came across seven moose on his 64-mile ride. I’ve been wantin’ to mention it the last few weeks as I’ve viewed a large number of what looks to be swans in the Mission Slough. Saw what looked to be about 30-40 one day on the south side of the freeway, and then there were 10-12 on the north side earlier this week ... also quite a few great blue herons. There continues to be a number of elk along the North Fork that can be viewed early in the day as well as the later evenings. The Lambros property has seen quite a few elk and deer, particularly in the evening ... gotta watch the straight stretch as deer dart out ... Folks at Prichard know what I’m sayin’.
Enduro motorcycle races at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds tonight. Seafair weekend in Seattle as the cruiser USS Bunker Hill and two other ships dock for the weekend of festivities that includes the Blue Angels ... and traffic jams over the bridge at Lake Washington. Don’t forget the Sixth Street Melodrama as they begin their second part of the new season with a new play ... The Route of The Hiawatha, zip line in Wallace, museums to visit, swimmin’ pools open, breweries in Wallace to tour and taste, the Accordion Festival and Huckleberry Days comin’ soon in Wallace. And ... sports teams getting’ ready for pre-season practices. I think Kellogg plays 2 or 3 games before Labor Day this year — at home!
Busy weekend with temps predicted to be in the 90s ... See you on the North Fork, or, at the parade and Car Show at Pinehurst with the grandkids. Also, don’t forget the miners competition at Gene Day Park Saturday. If you’re on the freeway, you’ll know pretty much right away that the annual biker migration to Sturgis is underway…
