Calvert faces charges
THOMPSON FALLS — The preliminary hearing for Nathan Lee William Calvert scheduled for Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Sanders County Justice Court was vacated because charges against Calvert were brought forth by Sanders County Attorney Robert Zimmerman.
Calvert, the alleged murderer in a deadly Dec. 6 home invasion in Dixon, was charged with four counts of felonies – deliberate homicide, attempted deliberate homicide, aggravated burglary and robbery.
Court documents stated that deliberate homicide “is punishable by death, by life imprisonment, or by imprisonment in the state prison for a term of not less than 10 years or more than 110 years.”
The documents released Monday described the tragic murder of Doug Morigeau in vivid detail. A quiet night at a home gone astray, twisting itself into a horrific murder scene.
According to the affidavit filed by Zimmerman, Calvert, high on the synthetic drug ‘spice’, barged through the front door of the residence, knocking down Doug Morigeau. His wife, Cheryl Morigeau, believed that Calvert was repeatedly punching her husband. However, Calvert was stabbing Doug Morigeau – 54 times to be exact.
The affidavit also recounted Calvert’s interview statement regarding the event where he stated that Morigeau “would not die” as he repeatedly stabbed him “in the neck, stomach, and all over.”
Calvert then proceeded to hit Doug Morigeau with a pump action .22 rifle that broke during the attack.
Cheryl Morigeau came to her husband’s defense and had her throat cut by Calvert.
At first, Calvert claimed to have not remembered Cheryl Morigeau but after seeing a picture of her, he admitted that he stabbed her in the throat and was unsure of how many other times he had stabbed her.
During the attack, Cheryl Morigeau realized that her husband was going to be unable to get the intruder out of the house so she stepped out the back door.
According to the affidavit, “it got quiet in the house.” In an effort to avoid another attack from Calvert, Cheryl Morigeau fled across Highway 212 to the driveway of her brother-in-law’s residence where she phoned 911.
Neither of the Morigeaus knew the intruder. Cheryl Morigeau went on to describe the attackers eyes “as cold and evil.”
In the interview with Calvert in the affidavit, Calvert admitted to smoking spice for up to two weeks almost constantly.
Calvert stated that he heard voices and began hallucinating while on the drug.
Court documents also revealed that Calvert stabbed a third person before the attack on the Morigeaus.
Gordon Northpiegan was stabbed in the back after Calvert “became convinced that Northpeigan was going to kill him.”
Northpiegan was identified as the boyfriend or husband of Calvert’s sister-in-law.
Northpiegan denied to police officers that he was stabbed but later was treated at a Polson hospital for a stab wound. He then admitted that Calvert had stabbed him.
Calvert is being held at Sanders County Jail.
A date has been set for his court appearance but at the time of press, the information was unavailable.
