Lake County shows plenty of fight as 16 wrestlers place at state

tournament

Polson takes seventh at state - By Brandon Hansen

BILLINGS - Five different Polson grapplers stood on the podium last Saturday at the All-State Tournament in Rimrock Auto Arena, a fitting end to the wrestling season that saw the Pirates make tremendous strides.

"We made a lot of progress, there were a lot of teams beating us at the beginning of the year," Polson head coach Bob Owen said.

Polson came into the season having won two straight divisional titles, but a third one appeared in question after some early season dual losses. However, the kids kept working, and it definitely showed in the later stages of the season. Polson three-peated at the divisional tournament, sent 14 wrestlers to Billings and placed seventh at the state tournament with 111 points.

"I think we finished about where we expected to," Polson head coach Bob Owen said. "I felt like we had a shot at getting a couple kids in the finals."

Three different Polson grapplers made it to the semifinals and while they didn't advance to the championship match, they still showed gumption in the consolation semifinals and finals.

"That's easily the toughest match in the tournament since you've got to come back from a loss and win," Owen said.

Junior Craig Feistner placed at the state tournament for the third-straight year, earning third place in the 125-pound division. Feistner won it by downing fellow Northwestern A wrestler Cody Lemons of Frenchtown in 2:58.

"He's in a tough weight class and faced the two-time state champion in the semifinals," Owen said. "Craig wrestled hard. He gave it his best shot and got back into third."

Feistner started the tournament with a pin of Laurel's Jon Verlanic 1:46 into the first-round match. He followed that up with a pin of Corvallis' Kevin Fogel in 4:08 of the quarterfinal matchup. That put him up against the No. 1-ranked kid in the state, Glendive's Tyler Kinn. Kinn was able to eke out an 8-4 decision over Feistner, but the Polson wrestler wasn't done with his weekend.

He bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 4-2 decision over Butte Central's Zach Hart, then downed Lemons in the consolation finals.

"Craig is going to be an excellent leader for us next years." Owen said.

Senior heavyweight Josiah Clairmont battled with adversity during the state tournament, learning that his stepfather had unexpectedly passed away in Alaska last Thursday.

Clairmont dedicated his matches over the weekend to his stepfather.

"It's been a pretty rough week," Clairmont told the Daily Inter Lake after his quarterfinal victory on Friday.

Clairmont started the tournament with a 21-second pin of Glendive's Brock Martin, then pinned Kolton Lodge from Havre in just 55 seconds.

Owen had said before that Clairmont is "brute strength" out on the mat and he certainly showed it at the state tournament. After suffering a setback in the semifinals, losing to IIen Neublib from Sidney, the two-time divisional, fought back in the consolation semifinals with a fall of Dillon's Donovan Huckle at the 1:16 mark. In the consolation finals match he made quick work of Corvallis' Austin Atkins, pinning him in 45 seconds for third place.

Fellow senior Alex Nystrom had come into the season focused and it finally paid off at the state tournament with a fourth-place finish in the 140-pound classification.

"Alex was the big surprise," Owen said. "He wrestled really hard and probably had his tournament of the year. It's well deserved, Alex never missed a practice or a chance to work out. Finishing in the top four is a nice reward."

Nystrom began the tournament with a first-round 8-0 victory over Zeus Rutherford from Browning and then an 8-1 decision over Anaconda's Nick Beattie in the quarterfinals. While Nystrom was downed in the semifinals, he was able to move on in the bracket with a 3-1 decision over Lewistown's John Chamberlain in the consolation semifinals to secure fourth place.

112-pound Carlos Quinones and 152-pound Mike Devlin both placed fifth for the Pirates. Quinones got an 8-7 decision over Glendive's Tate Stortz in the first round, then fell in the quarterfinals. He was able to wrestle back in the second-round consolation match with a pin of Harve's Chandler Metcalf at the 1:34 mark. He continued to wrestle well with a consolation quarterfinal victory over Havre's Nathan Kennelly, falling him with a pin 5:47 into the match.

He was defeated in the consolation semifinals to place fifth and should be one of the top grapplers on Polson's squad next year as just a junior.

"He kind of had one bad match but he wrestled pretty darn well," Owen said. "He'll come back next year and he'll be a contender."

Junior Mike Devlin advanced in the first round with a fall of Jayson Kohler from Havre at the 1:19 mark. After falling in the second round, he finished Friday up with a fall of Sidney's Joe Barsotti, 1:39 into the match. On Saturday, he registered a 36-second pin of Anaconda's Ethan Reich in the consolation quarterfinals. By reaching the semifinals, Devlin placed fifth in the tournament.

"I'm glad he placed in the tournament," Owen said. "He's really talented and has the ability."

Polson had eight wrestlers reach the quarterfinals. Along with the state placers, 98-pound Alex Helgeson, 105-pound Taylor Martin and 135-pound Skylar Anderson all registered first-round victories. With a large junior class and plenty of underclassmen, Polson wrestling looks like they'll have a lot of returning talent for next season as they go for their fourth-straight divisional title.

"We've got an excellent nucleus for next year and my hope is we can fill a few more weight classes," Owen said.

Chiefs grapplers grab fifth - By Brandon Hansen

BILLINGS - Ronan found its stride at the end of the season and the momentum certainly carried over into the state tournament. Last weekend, five of the eight wrestlers the Chiefs sent to Billings stood on the podium as placers.

"We were very pleased with the weekend," Ronan head coach Dustyn Azure said. "We came together at the end of the year. I felt like they had a huge surge at the end and they started to get a lot more confidence. We're really excited for next year."

Quentin Denton and Colby Roberts both placed third in the tournament, showing plenty of grit wrestling back from losses.

"It's kind of the way we've trained them mentally," Azure said. "You have to have a short memory."

That mentality helped the Chiefs in several tournaments this year, and it obviously paid off for Denton and Roberts. In the 160-pound division, Denton started the tournament off with a pin of Shelby's Lucas Brachle in the first round, after a quarterfinal loss, Denton won in the second round consolation matches with a pin of Huntley Project's Robbie Simmons at the 3:08 mark of the match.

That put him in a consolation semifinal matchup with Mission Valley rival Leif Rova from Arlee. Denton record the 5-3 decision and in the third-place match against Chinook's Cole Werdal, Denton recorded a 3-1 decision win.

"He did a great job wrestling back and wrestling all the way back to the third-place match," Azure said. "He beat the kid that beat him in the quarterfinals so he got his revenge."

Roberts took a different route in the 189-pound bracket, by winning his first-round match against Conrad's Tyler Nelson with a pin in 1:10 and then advancing to the semifinals with a second-round pin of Greg Hinojosa in 3:35. Eventual state champion Benjamin Stroh from Chinook handed Roberts his first loss of the tournament in the semifinals, but the Ronan wrestler battled back by defeating Arlee's Clayton Trimble with a pin 4:15 back into the match. Roberts capped off the weekend with a 1:54 pin of Colstrip's Tanner Yates for third place.

"Colby ran into Stroh, that was a really stacked bracket," Azure said. "After he loss he battled back well with back-to-back pins and forgot about that match."

125-pound Brandon Dumon placed fourth for the Chiefs after falling in the first round of the state tournament. After his initial lost, he rattled off a pin of Baker's Cody Perry 2:57 into the first-round consolation match then won by technical fall 15-0 over Cascade's Clancy Ludvigson. In the consolation quarterfinals, Dumont won a 9-5 decision over Baker's Jonathan Wiseman and then downed Circle's Rico Stormer with a 5-4 decision to advance to the third-place match. Dumont ended up taking fourth for the Chiefs and finished with a tournament record of 4-2.

Dustin Goldsby finished his senior season with a fifth-place finish at the state tournament in the 152-pound bracket.

Goldsby started the tournament off with a first-round technical fall 19-3 win over Glasgow's Ryan Bergtoll. In the quarterfinals he downs Malta's Nathan Carlson with a pin at the 5:19 mark of the match. Goldsby fell by decision in the semifinals, and then again in the consolation semifinals but in the fifth-place match he was able to pick up a close overtime 4-2 victory over teammate Shelby Grant.

"We're really proud of Dustin, he had a really great career," Azure said.

Goldsby didn't make it to state his freshman and sophomore year, but came within a match of placing last season. This year he picked up his first medal as a state wrestler.

"It shows how hard work pays off," Azure said.

Grant placed sixth in the 152-category after wrestling back through the bracket. He won his first-round matchup against Baker's David Thibodeau with a 12-0 major decision. After falling in the quarterfinals, Grant bounced back in the second round of the consolation bracket with a pin of Cascades Timmy Smith three minutes into the match. He recorded another pin in the consolation quarterfinals with a pin of Malta's Nathan Carlson at the 2:16 mark. Grant fell in the semifinals and would end up placing sixth.

"We're really excited but we just can't sit on it," Azure said. "The kids around going to have to make it happen with workouts and tournaments in the offseason. If they do that I think we'll be sitting just fine."

Petersen leads Bulldogs - By Brandon Hansen

BILLINGS - Three wrestlers placed for Mission-Charlo last weekend at the All Class Wrestling Tournament and Jacen Petersen finished the highest out of any Lake County grappler this year with a second-place finish in the 160-pound Class B/C weight division.

Petersen posted a 3-1 record against the state's best competition. In the first round, Petersen earned a 19-second pin against Harlem's Denton Cornell. In the quarterfinals, Peterson recorded a 5-0 decision over Baker's Buster Pickett.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Petersen defeated Choteau's Cole Werdall by technical fall, 16-0.

In the finals, Petersen faced an old nemesis in Drummond's Barrett Stanghill and while he didn't get first place, still capped off a very successful season.

Senior Scotty Gilleard placed third for the Bulldogs in the 130-pound division, capping off his impressive wrestling career.

Gilleard recorded a 49-second pin over Glasgow's Chaz Kolski in the first round of the tournament. He followed that up by defeating Choteau's Trey Stone with a pin at the 4:47 mark of the match.

Gilleard narrowly lost in the semifinals but bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a 7-1 decision of Baker's Travis Koenig.

In the third-place match, Gilleard pinned Florence's Kody Davidson at the 2:16 mark.

Jamie Mullins placed sixth for the Bulldogs at 105 pounds.

Mullins started his run with a first-round pin of Townsend's Baxter Roach at the 1:57 mark. In the quarterfinals, he notched an overtime 8-6 decision over Conrad's Morgan Koenig.

On Saturday, Mullins had his first defeat in the quarterfinals, and would end up placing sixth at the tournament.

With Mullins and Petersen coming back, there will be plenty of state experience on the Bulldogs roster next year. Mission-Charlo showed plenty of fight all season and put together a string of impressive tournament performances. All indications point to that continuing.

Arlee places third among C schools - By Dylan Kitzan

BILLINGS - Led by a trio of seniors who left with medals, the Arlee Warriors took home a third-place trophy at the Class B-C State Wrestling Tournament last weekend in Billings.

At 160 pounds, Leif Rova took home fifth place after recording three wins in five matches, including a first-round pinfall of Big Sandy's Jace Solf in his opening match.

Solf entered the tournament as the North's top seed. En route to his finish, Rova also defeated Choteau's Matt McKenzie by a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinal round and knocked off Shepherd's Calen Carpenter in a 9-3 win.

Clayton Trimble, at 189, earned a tournament-opening victory against Big Sandy's Lane Martin thanks to a second-round pin, while also defeating Forsyth's Frank Marcy just 1:19 into the match and Thompson Falls' Eric Milner by a 3-1 decision.

In his fifth-place match, Trimble matched Rova's finish by defeating Greg Hinojosa from Choteau 11-6 to capture fifth place.

At 215, Cody North capped his career with a sixth-place finish, winning three matches by pin. In his first bout, North defeated Cody Black Crow of Harlem 15 seconds into the final round.

After a loss, North bounced back with first-round pins of Belt's Christian Cottingham and Malta's Henry Oyler. North then fought hard in defeats to Lane Knows His Gun of Colstrip and Baker's Dustin Irgens.

"They were hoping to finish higher, but they wrestled well against tough competition," Arlee head coach Ken Hill said of his seniors.

Overall, seven of eight Warrior grapplers finished with at least one win at the state tournament.

"We performed really well and wrestled tough," Hill said.

Albert Plant, at 171, won a pair of matches, defeating Clarence McNabb of Heart Butte by forfeit, along with Colstrip's Will Griffel in a 57-second pinfall. Cameron Dominick, at 135, outlasted Ryan Lesofski of Fairfield-Power 6-3, while 145-pounder Nathan Bertollt pinned another Lesofski, Adam, midway through the second round and Logan Lefler, 171, wasted little time, pinning Shepherd's Isaac Reiss in just 22 seconds.

"It was a successful season," Hill said. "We wrestled a lot, kids were close to 45 or 50 matches and they improved all season."

While Hill was pleased with how the season developed, he already has his eye toward the 2012-13 campaign.

"We're graduating five seniors, but we have a really good eighth grade class coming in," Hill said.

That class has some big shoes to fill, but the Warriors will again have a group of guys ready to compete next season.
