PABLO - SKC bounced back from a 1-2 performance at the Montana Tribal College Athletic Association Championships
two weeks ago by defeating the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the MTCAA last weekend.
The Lady Bison downed Fort Belknap 82-59 on Friday, then defeated Stone Child College 62-57 on Saturday.
"Overall I think we did really well as a team," Lady Bison head coach Juan Perez said. "To come back and beat SCC and Fort Belknap, that was good. We had lost to Fort Belknap by
three two weeks ago. We made some adjustments on defense to help us out more and it showed more this weekend."
In fact, the weekend was the first time that Perez has implemented a new offense and defense and he was pleased with how the Lady Bison ran them both. On Friday, SKC grabbed a 20-point lead at halftime, 44-24, then cruised to the 82-59 victory.
The Lady Bison were paced by Chantel Jenkins who scored 31 points and was feeling the groove during the game.
"She was just on fire," Perez said. "When I took her out of the game, she kind of looked at me and said ‘I'm not ready to come out' but I knew that we had a big game the next day and needed her."
SKC got 20 points from Lisa Bible, who notched four three-point shots.
"Lisa's shooting is really coming along nicely and that opens up drives to the basket" Perez said.
Eva Green had 16 points in the game.
The next day, the Lady Bison battled against Stone Child College and came out on top in a close one, 62-57. SKC led 25-24 at the half and things would remain close until the buzzer with the Lady Bison pulling out the victory.
"Saturday's game was a bit tight but SCC is a tough team and it says a lot about where our girls are this season with the game of basketball," Perez said.
Jenkins led the team with 21 points, and Green had 18.
"Eva had a really good weekend," Perez said. "She played strong and did a good job."
Kayla Johnson reached double digits with 12. The Lady Bison are now a number of weeks away from their ultimate test, the AIHEC National Tournament, held in Rapid City, South Dakota this year.
"Now it's a lot of refining defensively and offensively and working on our conditioning," Perez said. "We've got to make sure we stay strong in preparation for the AIHEC Tournament."
The tournament is scheduled for March 21-24.
