ST. REGIS - Two Eagle picked up a big victory against St. Regis last Friday and very nearly did it again against Superior on Saturday. While they dropped their second game of the season to the Bobcats, the Eagles still look very much in control of their destiny in the crazy 14-C district.
"At the district tournament, the top three teams can be anybody," Two Eagle head coach Clayton Malatare said. "The district tournament is going to be fun."
Against St. Regis on Friday, the Eagles' defense was equally as impressive as their offense in a 63-21 win. Two Eagle held the Tigers to just four points in the first half and again showed they've got solid prowess on both sides of the court this year.
"I think we're playing as well as we can on defense," Malatare said.
Three different Eagles scored in double digits, with Marcus Brown and Artie Mendoza leading the way with 12 points apiece. Nine different players for Two Eagle scored against St. Regis and by halftime they had mounted a 40-4 lead.
In the second half, Malatare was able to get plenty of his players time out on the floor while giving some rest to his starters in preparation for the Superior game.
They didn't disappoint, and added to the lead en route to victory. Skyler Rossbach had 11 points in the game and Cole Noble had nine.
Going into the Superior game on Saturday, Two Eagle knew they had a tough opponent but came out with intensity. The Eagles jumped out to a 29-22 lead at halftime but a third quarter run by the Bobcats ended up leading to a 61-51 Superior victory.
"They're tough defensively because they've got size," Malatare said. "They have three big kids and they play smart."
Two Eagle held Superior to single digits in the first quarter and opened up quite the lead before the Bobcats started to chip away.
"We kind of got complacent and then we started to get a bit sloppy," Malatare said. "On offense, we got too much in a hurry and we got over aggressive."
Superior went on a 16-6 run in the third quarter to take the lead but Two Eagle battled in the fourth and made it exciting down to the wire. Rossbach had 18 points and only foul trouble could slow him down in later stages of the game. Brown scored 14 and Mendoza added 10.
At 6-2, Two Eagle will play Arlee on Thursday and Valley Christian on Saturday.
