Dollars for Scholars awards Polson students

POLSON — Polson Dollars for Scholars awarded 19 scholarships totaling $19,000 to Polson High School seniors and former Polson High School graduates who are currently attending an accredited two-year community college, four-year university or vocational school.

Scholarships were provided to the following senior students: Jonathan Murphy received two $500 dollar scholarships — one $500 scholarship named the Toby Nelson Scholarship sponsored by the Amy Nelson. A second scholarship for $500 from the Theiler family who sponsors the John Oberlitner Scholarship. Ian Laimbeer, a senior, and Karissa Koberg, a college sophomore, also received $1,000 scholarships from the Oberlitner Scholarship. Jessica Rubel received the $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Montecatto Club House. Laura Barta, a senior, and Carrie Prewett, a college junior, each received $1,000 scholarships sponsored by District No. 23 employees. The Class of ’59 Scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Molly Whitewater. Peregrine Frissell received the $1,000 scholarship from Polson Dollars for Scholars for a graduating senior. A scholarship for $1,000 sponsored by an anonymous donor was presented to Carly Fors.

Additional Polson graduates who are currently enrolled in college received the following scholarships: Two $1,000 scholarships provided through Polson Dollars for Scholars: the Walker Scholarship for a student attending MSU Bozeman was presented to Laura Rost, and a second scholarship sponsored by the Dr. Keith Nelson family, in memory of Dr. Keith Nelson, was presented to Kayla Duford. The Sue Gregg Lanier Scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Madison Hunter. The $1,000 Fred Barnowsky Memorial Scholarship was presented to both Jordan Hinshaw and Chawn DuBack. The $1,000 Polson Bay Grocery/Kineas-Mahoney Memorial Scholarship, was awarded to Jacob Feistner. The Merle Anderson Scholarship for $1,000, in memory of Merle Anderson, was awarded to Sean Foot , and the Polson Alumni Classes of 1920-1955 Scholarship was presented to Andrew Storro. The Polson Dollars for Scholars vocational scholarship for $1,000 was awarded to Macall Banner. The scholarships provided by individuals or separate organizations are in the amount of $500 and Polson Dollars for Scholars matched each $500 scholarship to provide the students with a $1,000 scholarship.

Polson Dollars for Scholars is a local non-profit organization established in 2002. The purpose of the organization is to expand access to post-secondary educational opportunities for Polson High School graduates.

Since its inception, Polson Dollars for Scholars has provided 124 students with over $100,000 worth of scholarships. Tax-deductible donations and fund-raisers provide the funds for scholarships as well as individuals setting up a scholarship fund in memory of a loved one.

All donations and monies raised go toward scholarships. The board of directors is comprised of local volunteers who would like to encourage anyone interested to furthering the goal to please join the organization.
