VFW breakfast

Polson clean up

The second annual Clean Up! Green Up! Community-wide spring clean will be held in Polson on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, May 6 from 12-5 p.m. Cleanup headquarters will be at Riverside Park where volunteers can grab a cup of coffee, some gloves and garbage bags before headling out to clean up major roadsides and public parks. Homeowners are encouraged to clean up their yards and help elderly neighbors do the same. Yard trimmings may be placed in the street gutters; Polson city crews will pick it up on Friday, May 18.

EAA breakfast

The Experimental Aircraft Association Lake County Chapter will host a breakfast of pancakes, ham and eggs on Sunday, May 6 from 8-11 a.m. at the Polson Airport. The public is invited to come out for a healthy breakfast and meet the pilots and aircraft owners who will be flying the kids during the summer. River honoring

The public is invited to attend the 2012 River Honoring on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. The evening will begin with an announcement of the 2012 River Honorees, followed by a free barbeque. On Tuesday and Wednesday, nearly 1,000 fourth and fifth-graders will attend the River Honoring, providing students an opportunity to increase their awareness of the unique natural and cultural resource attributes of the Lower Flathead River. To attend, turn west at Ronan on Round Butte Rd. and drive eight miles west, turn south on Moiese Valley Rd. Drive six miles to the teepee camp along the Lower Flathead River. Audubon presentation

Dr. Adrian Leighton’s “Forest Health and Management in a Climate of Change” will be the subject of the next Mission Mountain Audubon program on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Polson Library Meeting Room. Dr. Leighton’s presentation will explore current forest health issues in the context of how individual and groups of trees grow, among other topics. Dr. Leighton, foresty teacher at SKC, will also cover changes over time in climatic conditions, forest stands, management objectives and other areas.

PRFD meets

The next Polson Rural Fire District Trustee Monthly Meeting will be on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Station. In addition to the election of officers, the meeting will include updating DNRC contacts and considering changes to clothing allowance, among other topics.

Thyme for herbs

The next Thyme for Herbs Group meeting will be Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the North Lake County Public Library Meeting Room. There will be no plant exchange that night, but we will be discussing “Growing and Using Herbs.” If you’re new to the group, please call Linda Peterson at 319-2446. Everyone is invited to join us.

Producer to speak

Jerry Molen, producer of film such as Rain Man, Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List, will be speaking at the Ronan Middle School Auditorium on Monday, May 14 at 7 p.m.

SKC luncheon

The SKC Foundation 2012 Annual Luncheon will be Wednesday, May 16 from 12-1 p.m. at the KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson. Kody Ensley, SKC NASA students, will be speaking. Only a few seats remain for this free event. Contact Angelique Albert (406-275-4820) more for information.

Health screenings

Women and men of all ages are welcome for free health screenings and services, including bone density screens, carotid imaging and mammograms at Health Matters! Yours, Mine and Ours on Thursday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Joe McDonald Health and Fitness Center at SKC.

Basket challenge

Women 4 Wellness and SAFE Harbor are asking community groups, businesses, individuals and anyone else to take the Great Basket Challenge, a challenge where individuals or groups fill a basket with items that SAFE Harbor uses throughout the year. Volunteers will distribute the baskets on Thursday, May 10 and the filled baskets will be displayed at the Women 4 Wellness event on Thursday, May 17 at SKC. Shred day

The fifth-annual Community After Tax Shred Day will be held Friday, May 18 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Community Bank in Polson. There will be a mobile shred truck at the bank to shred personal documents and bank staff will be available with tips to protect yourself from identity theft.

Big Arm potluck

The next Big Arm potluck will be on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at the historic school. Denver Holt, founder and director of the renowned Owl Research Institute, will be the guest speaker, beginning his presentation at 7 p.m. Holt’s research on snowy owls has been featured in documentaries for National Geographic Explorer, as well as other TV programs. Veterans courts

Come learn about veterans courts and other options for veterans who are involved in the criminal justice system on Wednesday, May 23 from 12-1 p.m. at the Lake County Public Health Department.

Kids fishing day

The Kids Fishing Day will be held at the Family Fishing pond at Ninepipes Reservoir on Saturday, June 2 from 8-11 a.m. Kids 13 years old and younger are invited to participate and door prizes, drawings and a fish ID test will be held.
