M's sweep Class AA Twins

POLSON — Justin Evertz and Dalton Molzhon sparkled on the mound in their season debuts, helping the Mission Valley Mariners sweep the Glacier Twins AA on Saturday 3-1 and 12-2 in American Legion baseball.

POLSON — Justin Evertz and Dalton Molzhon sparkled on the mound in their season debuts, helping the Mission Valley Mariners sweep the Glacier Twins AA on Saturday 3-1 and 12-2 in American Legion baseball.

Evertz held Glacier to two singles. He struck out five and issued five walks in seven innings in the opener.

Molzhon checked Glacier on four hits in the second game. His pitch count was 67.

“Evertz threw very well,” Mission Valley coach Jami Hanson said. “Dalton had two strikeouts, but only gave up one walk.”

Hanson said Austin Von Tom had a stellar play in the outfield in the first game. The right fielder threw out a Glacier runner at the plate trying to score from third on a fly ball.

That was in the sixth inning.

“A huge play in that game,” he said. “It ended the inning.”

Von Tom and Jacob Young were 2-for-3 in the first game. Von Tom also drove in two runs.

Hitting leaders for the Mariners in Game 2 were Robbie Gauthier, 2-for-4, and Evertz, 2-for-3.

Von Tom and Glacier’s Jacob Slaybaugh doubled in that contest.

Mission Valley (5-2) plays at the Kalispell Lakers AA today. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
