Evans, Brown connect for three scores on way to a 32-6 win over the Lions

ST. IGNATIUS — Quarterback Dylan Evans and receiver Jarred Brown exploited the Eureka secondary for three touchdown connections en route to a 32-6 victory for Mission over the Lions on Friday.
Raymond Matt got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a two-yard run for a touchdown in the first quarter. He toted the ball 13 times on the day for 85 yards on the ground.
Eureka responded with a touchdown run of its own by Cole Jankovsky to bring the score to 7-6.
However, that would be the last of the scoring for the Lions, as they watched Mission post another 25 points before all was said and done.
18 of those points came off of touchdown passes from Evans to Brown, as the duo hooked up for scores on passes of 23, 21 and 13 yards.
Bulldogs head coach Rich Ferris said this was combination he had been waiting to see come alive in a game this season.
“We were hoping that they would click during the season,” Ferris said. “We watch them in practice and Jarred runs really good routes and Dylan has been able to get him a few balls, but we never got to fully click in a game. It was nice to see.”
However, the passing game wasn’t something the team had planned on featuring as much as they did coming into the game.
“People were packing the box pretty heavy against us, so we just felt like it would be an opportunity for us to throw the ball,” Ferris said.
Evans also plunged his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter for another score.
He ended the day with 88 yards passing on five completions and seven carries for 17 yards rushing.
After a lackluster performance against Cut Bank Ferris said the team focused on improving their blocking to ensure they would not be stonewalled once again.
“We tried to be a little more disciplined in our blocking scheme, blocking exactly who they’re supposed to and making sure we’ve got a body on everybody,” Ferris said.
He was very pleased with the results of these adjustments.
“I was real happy with our discipline,” Ferris said. “We made some mistakes, but we did a good job of having composure and, even when things went wrong, not letting things affect us.”
On defense, the team was led by senior leaders Nikko Alexander and Barret Sargent, who Ferris credits the speedy maturation of the younger players on the squad.
“They do a great job of leading those young guys,” Ferris said. “They do a good job in practice and everything else of making sure that our young guys stay focused and try to get better.”
Alexander led the team with 10 total tackles on Friday, while Sargent racked up nine of his own, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble in the game.
Matt and Emilio Bravo, who also picked up his first sack of the season, recovered fumbles against the Lions as well.
The Bulldogs (2-1) will take on their first conference foe of the season on Sept. 21, when they travel to take on Florence (3-0).
Ferris expects Florence to try to hurt them through the air and will be looking for his secondary to hinder that plan.
“They’re a pretty athletic team,” Ferris said. “We’ve got to execute the best we can...They’ve got a really good passing attack, so we have to find ways to limit some of their athleticism.”
