Skyline Drive update - April 25
Active construction on the Skyline Drive project, including the closure of Skyline Drive to two-way traffic for the remainder of the construction season, began April 15. Northbound traffic across Skyline is open coming into Polson from the south for the duration. During construction hours — 7:00 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Friday — a pilot car on a 20 minute schedule is being used to shuttle traffic down the hill into town.
A major visual effect residents are noticing is the stripping of top soil on the hill near the communication towers to expose the underlying fill material. This “special borrow” will be used through the remainder of the project. After the fill material is removed, the topsoil will be returned, re-vegetated and a roughed in road for future development will remain.
Detours, emergency access roads, public easements and the permanent closing of the “Old Mission View” access onto Skyline were discussed. “New Mission View” which is located approximately 200 hundred yards east is scheduled to be open next week.
The final portion of the project, completion of the bike path on Caffery Road between Skyline Drive and Highway 93, is slated for construction late summer/early fall, pending funding
