Pirate girls place third in Missoula

MISSOULA — Playing short-handed and up against the big dogs didn’t intimidate Polson’s girls golf team last week.

The Pirates took third place in the two-day Missoula Invitational tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, spearheaded by an eighth-place finish from Jaylin Kenney (96-84—180). Kenney finished 23 strokes behind the winner, Helena Capital’s Coral Schulz, but just 11 strokes out of third place.

“Jaylin had a real good second day,” Polson coach Bill Owen said. Owen was excited about the way she rebounded from a disappointing 96 at Larchmont on Day 1.

Sophomore Peyton Anderson (94-102—196) posted the second-best score for the Pirate ladies, followed by Lauren Dupuis (101-98—199) and Heather Frank (100-104—204).

The girls were missing typical second-slot golfer Nicole Clairmont, who sat out last week due to disciplinary reasons, Owen said. She will likely return to the team this week.

“I’m not sure it made a difference because the two teams ahead of us were pretty good,” Owen said.

Polson finished 51 strokes behind second-place Helena Capital, and 73 strokes behind champion Hellgate. They did, however, defeat the five other Class AA schools competing in the tournament, which was held at Larchmont Golf Course on Wednesday and The Ranch Club on Thursday.

“For the girls, I learned that they can compete with those AA teams,” Owen said. “We had good enough results that we can compete in Class A, even without the second player.”

Owen would like to see the girls improve if they hope to carry home a third straight Class A state title.

“I feel like we’ve got to get lower than that by the time we get to the state tournament,” he said.

Polson’s boys cashed in an eighth-place finish, led by senior Alex Killian (79-90—169).

“He was a little off on that second day, but he’s got some promise,” Owen said. “I was a little excited that he was flirting with the 70s.”

Ryan Thurman (87-89—176) and Reno Lindesmith (89-89—178) followed Killian for the Pirates. Those results, Owen said, are much improved from last season. He’s still waiting on senior Dalton Noyes (99-94—193) to lower his scores.

“He’s a good athlete,” Owen said. “We’re just waiting for him to come around.”

The Pirates will host the Polson Invitational at Polson Bay Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 3 in their first home action of the season.
