SUPERIOR — Both Mission-Charlo’s and Arlee’s wrestling teams saw grapplers place on Saturday at the Superior Invitational.

Mission-Charlo merited a fifth-place finish behind a 170-pound victory from Jacen Petersen, a second-place finish from Steven Bravo at 195 pounds and third-place showings from 113-pounder Morgan Schultz and 120-pounder Gregory Weatherwax.

“We have a ways to go, but we’re sitting pretty good,” said Mission-Charlo coach Lyle Cronk.

Cronk was especially excited about Weatherwax’s effort.

“It was really a great day for Gregory Weatherwax,” he said. “He looked great and really started to get on his offense and moved really well on the mat.”

Schultz only fell to familiar foe Garrett White of Eureka in the 113-pound weight class, otherwise turning in a dominant performance.

“We were excited for the chance to wrestle him again, and we’re looking forward to getting another shot at him down the line,” Cronk said.

Petersen, undefeated so far this season, pinned Libby’s Garret Chapel in the 170-pound championship bout.

Another bright spot for Mission-Charlo was Swiss exchange student Manuel Amman, a first-time wrestler who went 2-2 on Saturday and has already won three matches early in the season. Kyle Couture and Tyler Spidel also posted 2-2 records.

Things may have gone even better had Mission-Charlo had 132-pounder Jamie Mullins, who was sidelined by a concussion he sustained in Thursday’s home quad match.

“We’ve really got a good group,” Cronk said. “We’re so excited to get our whole team in there together.”

Arlee, wrestling just five boys, saw sophomore Alex Bertollt take third place in the tough 170-pound bracket. The Warriors team netted 22.5 points to finish 12th.

Both teams hosted quad mixers on Thursday as well. Bertollt shone for Arlee in those bouts as well, pinning Plains’ Steven Clinkenbeard and Eureka’s Wyatt Miller.

At the Mission-Charlo mixer, Petersen and Bravo pinned both of their opponents as well.

Petersen and Schultz will travel to Couer d’Alene, Idaho this weekend in one of the Northwest’s premier tournaments of the season. The rest of the team will go to Corvallis.

“It’s just a matter of getting each individual to reach their own goals,” Cronk said.

Arlee will trek north to the Eureka Invitational this weekend.
