Community Conversation on Hunger

Please join us for a community conversation on hunger in Montana and Lake County.

Did you know that Lake County has the 5th highest food insecurity rate in the state? Are you interested in learning more about hunger in Montana and Lake County? Join the Montana Food Bank Network’s Community Conversation on Hunger in Montana and Lake County.

When: Wednesday, July 31st, 12:00 – 1:30pm (lunch provided)

What: Community Conversation on Hunger in Montana and Lake County

-Learn more about hunger in Montana, including its prevalence, causes, and consequences

-Learn more about hunger in Lake County, including results from a survey of food pantry clients in Ronan and St. Ignatius

-Discuss challenges to accessing food in your community for low-income residents

-Discuss ways to address hunger in your community

Who: Anyone interested in learning more about hunger, contributing to the conversation, or taking steps to address hunger in Lake County!

Family Get-Together

Get-together for the family and friends of the Plants, Morans, Charlos and Corwins. Come and rekindle old memories and friendships with a weekend campout, bring your tent, RV or what ever you have, or just come up for a meal and visit. Everyone welcome.

When: Aug. 3rd and 4th (Set up around 11:00 am on Sat.)

Where: Blue Bay Campground

Dinner: Sat. the 3rd will be at 5:00 pm. This is a potluck dinner. If your last name begins with

•    A-F  bring salads,

•    G-N bring main dishes such as casseroles, etc

•    O-S bring desserts

•    T-W bring chips, dips or veggies

We plan on having roast, hot dogs, and water available.  Bring your own beverage.

Breakfast and lunch on Sunday will be on our own or cook a little extra for all of us to share. If you have any games you can bring, please do so. Bring your own chairs. Ronan ‘63 Reunion

The Ronan High School class of 1963 is holding their 50th class reunion Aug. 2,3, and 4th.  Our plans are to meet in Polson Friday, buy tickets for $15 ea., and cruise the lake on the boat out of KwaTuknak at 1 p.m.; gather in the Ronan City Park under the pavilion for a bring-your-own basket picnic at 5 p.m.  Sat., meet at the VFW breakfast at 9 a.m., then do a walking tour of the town led by Ray Read.  At 3 p.m. we’ll begin gathering up at Cheff’s Guest Ranch for a get-together, and dinner.  They need a head count, so if you haven’t already notified me, be sure to do so right away, so I can up their count. Cost is $15 each. Sunday, at noon, we’ll ride on a hay wagon in the parade behind Jim Smith. Pachyderm Club

Frank Tyro, an award-winning filmmaker, general manager and chief engineer of KSKC and a professor at Salish Kootenai College since 1984, will be the featured speaker at the Friday, July 26 meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm Club. He will present a brief history of television, public and educational television in America with comparisons to other countries.  

Frank brought local public television to the Flathead Reservation in 1987.  His background includes 44 years in broadcast, producing television documentaries and teaching.  Frank is a recurrent visitor to Churchill, Manitoba with the Great Bear Foundation and leads field trips as a volunteer.

Frank teaches photography, TV production and mass communication.  He has a B.S. in Film and Television from MSU, and M.A. from Temple University, Philadelphia in mass communications, and interdisciplinary PhD. From the Union Institute and University, Cincinnati in Distance Education with a focus on Internet-based coursework for American Indians.

Anyone interested in learning is cordially invited to the meeting which will be held in the Polson Rural Fire Hall on Regatta Road.  Social time begins at 11:30 a.m., and the one-hour meeting starts at 12 noon.

Biological Station Open House

The University of Montana’s Flathead Lake Biological Station invites the public to a free open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 25.

Visitors will learn about Flathead Lake and the station’s research, explore the facilities and take part in activities. UM Mascot Monte will be at the station from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

This year’s open house features research displays about Flathead Lake and its food web, the Flathead Lake weather and water buoys and sensor network, aquatic invasive species, North Fork Flathead River conservation, and remote sensing and geographic information systems. There also will be guided nature walks; displays of stream, pond and lake animals; a display of birds and mammals; and the contents of FLBS time capsules from 1912, 1967 and 2013.

Boat tours and research demonstrations will take place at 1:05, 1:50, 2:35, 3:20 and 4:05 p.m. Participants can reserve a space by picking up a boat ticket during the open house. Nature walks will take place at 2:40 and 3:30 p.m. At 3:15 p.m., UM Bierman Professor of Ecology and FLBS Director Jack Stanford will present “Research and Education at the Biological Station and Prospects for the Future.”

The Biological Station is located 17.5 miles north of Polson and 14 miles south of Bigfork along Highway 35 on Flathead Lake’s east shore.

Flathead Reservation Fish & Wildlife Meeting

The Flathead Reservation Fish and Wildlife Board will meet on Wednesday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Polson City Library. The agenda includes discussion of Pheasant and Hungarian Partridge seasons, waterfowl regulations, and State projects and accomplishments.  Board Chairman Joe Brenneman invites the public to attend and ask questions or express their views.

Polson School District Board Meeting

The Polson school district will be holding a special Board meeting on July 25th, and 4pm in the District Office Conference Room.

“Tryst”-The Mysterious Mr. Love”

The Port Polson Players present “Tryst”-The Mysterious Mr. Love”, an intriguing British thriller featuring Players Managing and Artistic Directors Neal and Karen Lewing.  The show opens Thursday, July 25 thru August 11.  Curtain time is 8PM Wednesdays thru Saturdays and 2PM for Sunday matinees.
