Medieval lessons

POLSON — Medieval lords and ladies, knights and peasants roamed the halls of Linderman Elementary School last Friday.

Fourth graders went back in time last week for the fair and lived what they learned about with a feast and tournament.

Dressed in costume, each kingdom member, aka classroom student, cheered on their fellow classmates as they competed in modern-day adaptations of centuries’ old games, including jousting, spear throwing and armor dressing.

Ashten Rivard enjoyed the day of festivities, especially the ball-and-chain melee game in the tournament. The fourth grader and his friends developed a strategy to use a sock filled with paper to knock crowns off their opponents’ heads. Ashten said he also enjoyed making his castle project.

“I got to make mine out of legos,” he said excitedly.

Each fourth-grade student is assigned a role in a medieval kingdom, then acted it out during the fair, teacher Tami Morrison said.

“They get into their role a little bit, and I think they understand a little bit better from just that role-play aspect of it,” Morrison said.

The fair was one of the fun ways fourth graders apply what they learn about medieval kingdoms, she said.

They also built castles, or completed a report, and will host a medieval market this week.

“Kids absolutely love it,” Morrison said. “It’ll be one of their best memories from fourth grade.”
