No election for Polson library district

POLSON — Despite saying so on mail-in ballots, the North Lake County Public Library District election is not contested.

Votes in the May 7 mail election for the library district won’t be counted, said Kathie Newgard, election administrator for the Lake County Election Office.

However, voters shouldn’t throw away their ballots — a $92,500 mill levy for the Polson Rural Fire District to be used for buying or maintaining fire protection equipment and facilities is still on the ballot.

Newgard said there was a misunderstanding about what seats were open in this election after county commissioners two years ago appointed the full board, with two people appointed to four-year terms and three people appointed to two-year terms. The later three seats are the ones open in this year’s election. Because only three people filed, Carole Olson, Marget “Maggie” Newman and Clint Hoxie will be elected by acclamation, Newgard said.

Also on this year’s ballot is a measure to create a library district in Ronan. If the district passes, the Ronan City Library could, at maximum mills, receive $199,000 a year from tax payers within the boundaries of the Ronan School District #30.

The Ronan and Charlo school board elections are contested. In Ronan, five people filed for two available three-year seats. Incumbent Robert “Bob” Cornwell faces Brian Bocksnick, Jack Duffey, John Cote and Bradley P. Wirz.

Four people filed for two available three-year seats on the Charlo board. Incumbents Dave De Grandpre and Donald Shane Reum will face Terrance R. Rosenbaum and Marv Stipe.

All Lake County ballots are due to the election office by 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.
