Charlo out swinging

CHARLO — Sheryl Kain should be satisfied with Charlo volleyball’s start to the season.

After taking down conference rival Arlee in straight sets on Thursday, the Vikings (2-0) dominated Superior (25-8, 25-11, 25-20) to cruise to victory.

“I’m actually very happy with them,” Kain, the coach, said. “We had a really good weekend.”

Sienna Brown led the Vikings on Saturday with seven kills and five digs. She hit nearly .500 (7-for-13) in the game.

The wealth was truly spread for Charlo, however, which saw Alyssa Doty (six kills), Michaela Krahn (five kills, five digs) and Aspen Runkel (four kills, seven digs, block) all contribute heavily.

“They’re moving. They’re talking. They seem to trust each other. It’s working so far,” Kain said matter-of-factly.

She’s very impressed on the team’s quick learning curve, based on a not-so-spectacular performance at their season-opening jamboree in Philipsburg two weekends ago.

“It was a huge difference from the tournament,” Kain said. “I did do a little rotation change, and I think that helped us too.”

The bigger test for Charlo comes tonight when they travel to reigning district champion Hot Springs.

“Thursday night will be a big test with Hot Springs,” Kain said over the phone earlier this week. “I think they’re just as strong as they were last year.”

The Vikings follow that game up with a trip to Two Eagle on Friday before they host Noxon, another potential district contender, on Saturday evening.
