Charlo boys win season's first meet
Area track teams did their first traveling of the season as all six county programs headed to various venues for early-season meets.
Charlo’s boys took the day at the Jim Johnson Invitational in Missoula last Thursday, coasting to a win behind championships from Tyler Delaney in the 400, Trent Dennison in the 800, Jacen Petersen in the pole vault, Manuel Ammann in the 2-mile and Kail Pope in both hurdles events. The Vikings, Class C’s defending state champions, also won both boys’ relays.
Arlee and Charlo’s girls had strong showings at that meet, placing second and fourth, respectively.
The Scarlets’ 400 relay took gold as did Alex Adams in the pole vault.
Arlee coach Russ Baker said that his boys were still missing several athletes, but the Warriors still managed four points.
Two Eagle River also ran in the meet, finishing 11th with 10 team points.
Polson, Ronan, Mission and Arlee all competed at the Gene Hughes Invitational in Corvallis on Saturday.
The Pirates opened their season with strong performances from a number of athletes, highlighted on the girls’ side by Chloie Huerta’s victory in the shot put and three of the top five (Amanda Harrod, Huerta and Erin Sampson) finishers in the discus. Freshmen Tiara Duford and Chadelle Smith both contributed a wealth of points as well.
Jacob Clairmont starred on the boys side for Polson. The sophomore took first in the long jump.
Ronan’s Lucas Gerhardt took the shot put, and a number of other Chiefs placed in their respective events.
