Prep Softball - Bagnell no-hits Fergus in Belgrade
BELGRADE — Polson’s Jessica Bagnell had a day to remember Saturday at the First Pitch Invitational when the senior tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the Pirates’ 8-0 win over Fergus County.
The jamboree-style tournament didn’t register as official MHSA competition, but that didn’t matter to Bagnell.
“It was great,” the senior said.
Polson coach Larry Smith said he could tell Bagnell had her best stuff before the game’s first pitch.
“She felt good that morning, and she warmed up very nice,” Smith said. “Right away she started striking out the top of the order. She just kept rolling along.”
Bagnell had elbow surgery after last season, and her health was in question at the start of this season, Smith said. With her healthy, the veteran coach is a lot more confident in his Pirates.
“As good as she’s been at the beginning, she’s just going to get better,” Smith said. “That’s an extremely good sign. I’m surprised that she’s been on her game this good this early.”
Bagnell, who struck out 13 of the 16 batters she faced, said she’s gotten extra motivation from Smith’s hesitance.
“I think I just wanted to prove my coach wrong,” she said.
