Drunk boater waves goodbye to reason

FLATHEAD LAKE – A Colorado man was arrested after leading Lake County Sheriff’s deputies on drunken Waverunner chase across the Flathead Lake.

Daniel W. Schaub, 56, of Atavon Colorado was arrested after he attempted to elude a Sheriff’s boat at about 5:30 p.m., July 30.

“He decided to try to elude the Sheriff’s boat on a wave runner,” Lake County Undersheriff Dan Yonkin said.

The chase started after a Sheriff’s boat on a routine patrol saw the Waverunner did not have mandatory numbers on it and attempted to stop Schaub.

The chase began at Blue Bay and ended at Yellow Bay, he said.

Schaub was cited and released for DUI.

Cats spend 9 lives to cause blackouts

POLSON – A series of small power outages and several calls to the Leader office in early July are likely related.

Mission Valley Power’s Craig Morigeau said a circuit in a south Polson substation caused the outages.

It appears that a large group of pigeons roosted at the substation, which then drew a series of cats.

Each time a cat learned it could climb into the electric company equipment to get closer to their prey, a short-circuit eliminated them from the feline gene pool.

The incident occurred at least twice, Morigeau said.

Morigeau said it’s been at least 15 years since the last time a cat got into a substation mess.

Morigeau said the area’s electrical grid weathered recent thunder and lightning storms well.

Magazine sellers could be scammers

LAKE COUNTY – Undersheriff Dan Yonkin said the dispatch center received a call during the week from an upset resident who was approached at home by kids trying to sell magazines. Yonkin said that though this incident may be completely innocent, that in years past, criminals used the magazine sales scam as a way to pre-case a home they would later mark for burglary.

Cops looking for leads in golf course burglary

POLSON – Polson Police Department Detective Michelle Scott said no new leads have surfaced on the suspect who walked into the Polson Bay Golf Course in broad daylight and stole $1,000 from the pro shop safe.

Detectives received several tips about the case, but none of the leads panned out into an arrest, she said.

The burglary took place at 2 p.m. July 14 when a suspect took advantage of desk personnel who was on the phone and calmly walked to the safe, grabbed the money and stuffed it into the front of his belt buckle. The suspect is thought to be a heavy-set male with brown hair and appears to be between 35 and 40 years old. He is about 5’8” and was wearing a black baseball cap, black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information can call the Polson Police Department at 406-883-7301, Polson detective Michelle Scott at 406-883-7277 or the Polson Police Department Facebook page.

WOODS BAY – Deputies are still looking for the public’s help looking for the person who committed a vicious assault on another man at about 2:15 a.m. July 22. The assault took place at the Raven Bar in Woods Bay.

The suspect is described as a Native American male in his early 20’s about 5’7, 150 lbs, with short, unkempt black hair.  Prior to the arrival of LCSO deputies, the suspect left the scene southbound on Hwy 35 towards Polson in a small white car, possibly a sport compact, with loud exhaust.  The suspect male was accompanied by a white male and a Native American female all of whom are described as being in their early 20s.

The unidentified female is somehow related to the suspect and her white iPhone 5 was severely damaged around the time of or as a result of this assault.  The victim was transported by ambulance to KRMC where he is hospitalized with significant injuries.
