Miracle of America Museum Free Event

A free program will be held on Jan 9th 2014. ”Think Snow” – a video of rare operating snow vehicles from the museum collection will be shown and a tour of some of the tools and toys of winter will be on display.

Dress warmly and come earlier if you want to see some of the outside collection.

These free events are held the second Thursday evening of the month at 6:30 pm. Free admission. Treats welcomed.

Affordable Care Act explained

Assisters are available to come and talk with your community group, neighborhood organization, church group, or at an activity that you think would be a good place for people to receive this information – just call (406) 546-0199 and we will schedule a time that works for you.  

Health insurance offered by the ACA begins on Jan. 1, 2014, but open enrollment will take place through March of 2014.

Health Board Member Needed

The Lake County Commissioners are seeking two citizen volunteers to serve three-year terms on the Lake County Board of Health.

The board has regular bimonthly meetings and occasional special meetings to address community health and environmental health issues. Meetings are normally held during business hours. There is no requirement for applying other than a strong interest in public health.

The Board of Commissioners will accept letters of interest to serve on the board through Monday, January 6, 2014. Letters should be addressed to the Lake County Commissioners, 106 4th Avenue East, Polson, Montana  59860. Quilt Guild

The Mission Mountain Quilt Guild will hold their January meeting on January 11 instead of January 7th.  We will host a “Sew-in” from 9:30 am to 4 pm at the Terrace Lake Community Church in Ronan.  

An Appreciation Dinner will be provided at noon, with a gift bag exchange as planned for our cancelled meeting in December.  The meeting will take place right after lunch.  

Please bring your sampler block of the month to show and your show and tell, plus any project you might want to spend the day sewing on – maybe your challenge project!

Town Hall Luncheon

You are invited to a Town Hall Luncheon on Monday, January 13 from 11:30-1 pm at the Polson Public Health Bldg. 802 Main St in Polson.

On behalf of Western MT addiction Services Prevention and the Lake Cares for Kids Network, we invite you to a showing of the Bright Beginnings Parenting Video Series created by the Bitterroot Cares for Kids Network in Ravalli County and featuring a great way to help raise healthy kids free from addictions and substance abuse!

What to expect? A wonderful lunch and door prizes and a brief look at the wonderful Bright Beginnings parenting series available on YouTube as well as a start-up for the Lake Cares for Kids Network! This event is FREE to our community and parents, professionals and teens are encouraged to come!

“Red Out” to remember Buck Young

The Polson Pirate and Lady Pirate basketball teams would like to honor Buck Young at this week’s Friday night basketball game against Ronan.

Buck was an avid volunteer and supporter of Pirate sports. He recently passed away. Buck’s favorite color was Ohio State Buckeye red and we are asking everyone to wear red to the game for a “Red Out”.

The Lady Pirates play Friday at 6:00 and the Pirates play at 7:30.

Public encouraged to attend Ronan meetings

The Ronan City Council will meet Monday, Jan. 6., at 6 p.m. at Ronan City Hall, 207 Main Street, SW.

The public is encouraged to attend the meetings, which are held the first and third Monday of each month.

Lake County Republican Women’s Club Public Meeting

The newest member of the Mission Mountain Drug Taskforce will make his debut at a public meeting being held at the North Lake County Public Library on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 7 p.m. in Polson.  

Everyone is invited to come and meet the new team member with especially watchful eyes and a prominent nose.  His name is “Llop” (pronounced Yop); in Catalonian Spanish it means “Wolf”.

Llop has come to Polson from Spain by way of New York City and Bozeman and now lives with his certified canine handler, Juan Maso, a five-year officer with the Polson Police Department.

In addition to introducing Llop, Police Chief Wade Nash will describe how a dog with a keen nose for drugs will enhance the work of the drug taskforce which as been involved with 70 felony drug cases in the Polson area since April, 2013.  

Chief Nash will share information about the meth and cocaine drug trade in the community as well as what families can do to curtail the abuse of prescription drugs by school age youth.

Join the Flathead Audubon Society for annual birding field trip

Flathead Audubon begins the New Year with its annual Mission Valley field trip on Sunday, January 12. Birders will look for hawks, waterfowl and other winter residents along Flathead Lake, through Polson and south in the Mission Valley.

Meet trip leaders Leslie Kehoe and Bob Lee at 8 a.m. at Somers Park ‘n’ Ride at the intersection of MT Highway 82 and US Highway 93.  Birders from the Polson and Mission Valley can join up at the Polson McDonalds, but please call for the meeting time. Participants should bring optics, lunch, warm clothing and New Year’s cheer.  To sign up, call Leslie Kehoe or Bob Lee at 406-837-4467 after 5 p.m. All ages and birding abilities are welcome.

Polson Rural Fire District to hold monthly trustee meeting

 The Polson Rural Fire District monthly trustee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. Fairgrounds Station.

The trustee meeting agenda includes: review December 2013 minutes, communications, review and approve claims, treasurer’s report, chief’s report.

Old business includes: update installation of monitor on 333, update workers’ comp issue, update on land out of district, update on station lights for flagpoles, building committee update (consider/bid and plans for new station), consider/accept bid for new tender

 New business includes: letter to commissioners regardomg crash response reimbursement, study update, city/rural committee update, discuss/advance details on sale of Station #4 to Search & Rescue.

All residents of the Polson Rural Fire District and interested general public are encouraged to attend. Resident’s questions and ideas help to keep the trustees informed and assist them in formulating their decisions. Any member of the public wishing to submit items for Board review/consideration needs to submit them to the Board Clerk at least 10 days in advance of the meeting.
